Raptor wrestlers split home duals, finish fourth in Shell Lake Challenge

The Raptors’ wrestling team hosted a Cloverbelt Conference triangular at Bloomer High School Thursday, January 23 where it split its two duals. Bloomer/Colfax shut out Thorp/Owen-Withee 71-0, but fell to Cloverbelt co-leader Cadott by a 67-6 score.
With those outcomes, Bloomer/Colfax is now 4-2 in Cloverbelt duals which currrently puts it in third place.
Two days later, on Saturday, January 25, the Raptors participated in the Shell Lake Challenge and returned home with a fourth-place finish in the 17-school tournament after scoring 188.5 points.
The squad has one final conference triangular slated for this Thursday, January 30 at Spencer High School. The Raptors are scheduled to grapple host Spencer/Columbus Catholic and Regis/Altoona.
Spencer will also be the site of this year’s Cloverbelt Conference tournament which is set for Saturday, February 8. The WIAA tournament series begins the following Saturday, February 15, with the super regional which will be held at Baldwin-Woodville High School.
Cloverbelt Triangular
Hosting a Cloverbelt Conference triangular meet in Bloomer, the Raptors earned a split of their two duals.
Bloomer/Colfax easily won its competition against Thorp/Owen-Withee as it received nine forfeits, scored a pair of pins along with a technical fall to earn a 71-0 triumph.
Colfax wrestlers Veronika Leavens (106), Blake Sparrgrove (132), Jacob Wahl (165), and Jayden Morgan (175) were all winners via forfeit.
Against conference wrestling powerhouse, Cadott, the Raptors were overwhelmed as the Hornets racked up wins in 13 of the 14 weight classes en route to a 67 to 6 win.
Bloomer/Colfax’s only win in the dual came at 126 pounds where Zeke Anderson was awarded a forfeit.
Colfax wrestlers all suffered losses in the Cadott dual. Blake Sparrgrove lost a close 13-12 decision to the Hornets’ Kellen Blanchette at 132 pounds, Jacob Wahl was shut out via an 8-0 major decision at 165 pounds by Cadott’s Aiydan Sonnentag and Jayden Morgan and Veronika Leavens both lost via pins.
Shell Lake Challenge
Bloomer/Colfax scored 188.5 points to place fourth at last Saturday’s Shell Lake Challenge.
Spring Valley/Elmwood finished atop the final team standings with a tally of 268.5. Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg/Siren was second with 240.5 points and Superior finished third after it scored 195 points. Seventeen schools took part in the meet.
The Raptors had 13 wrestlers place at the tournament. Zeke Anderson and Colfax’s Blake Sparrgrove had the best finishes for the local squad as both secured second-place finishes at their respective weights of 126 and 132 pounds. Drew Ryder (120) and James McElroy (150) took third, Jacob LaGesse (138) and Dyllon Zwiefelhofer (144) placed fifth, Colfax’s Mason Smith (126) and Veronika Leavens (113) were sixth and seventh, respectively, Gabriel Sperry (215) also placed seventh, 8th place went to Kolten Burgess at 190 pounds, Brock Hanson (165) and Ryan Frelk (285) finished ninth at their respective weights and Colfax’s Cole Parzyck was 11th at 144 pounds.
