Heading into last week, the Boyceville boys’ basketball team was scheduled to play Prairie Farm followed by games against the top three teams in the Dunn-St. Croix standings.
While sub-zero temperatures caused the postponement of home contests against Prairie Farm and conference co-leader Durand-Arkansaw which were slated for Monday, and Tuesday, January 20 and 21, respectively, the Bulldog still had to tip off against fellow D-SC co-leader Spring Valley and second-place Elk Mound.
Slow starts in both of those contests doomed Boyceville’s effort to picked up its a third conference win.
Spring Valley built a 32-17 halftime advantage when it hosted Boyceville last Friday, January 24 and went on to claim a 58-41 win.
With just the weekend to rest and prepare, Boyceville welcomed Elk Mound to the Dog House this past Monday evening, January 27. The Mounders defensive pressure combined with solid shooting from both sides of the three-point arc proved too much the Bulldogs in the 72-47 home loss.
With those back-to-back losses, Boyceville slipped to 2-4 in league games and 3-10 overall.
Boyceville is at Colfax this Thursday and goes to Elk Mound next Tuesday, February 4.
The postponed games have also been rescheduled. The Durand-Arkansaw contest is now set for February 11 with Prairie Farm game to follow on February 17.
Spring Valley
A trio of double-digit scorers led Spring Valley to a home win over Boyceville last Friday, January 24.
Masyn Wolf topped all scorers with 19 points, Cade Stasiek, Valley’s offensive leader, netted 17 and Caleb Bartko chipped in for an even dozen to lift the Red Birds to a 58-41 win over the Bulldogs.
Spring Valley used a quick start to take an early lead that it never relinquished.
Boyceville trailed 32-17 at halftime, but still found it difficult to slash its deficit throughout the second half as Spring Valley was able to maintain a double-digit advantage.
While eight Bulldogs scored in the game, no one hit double figures. Owen Rydel led the team with nine points, Tegan Lydon added eight points and six assists, Blaine Severson netted two of the Bulldogs four triples to finish with six points, Eli Weber had a trey and a deuce for five points while Carson Roemhild and Landyn Leslie each finished with four points. Roemhild had a high of 11 rebounds.
Boyceville was 7-for-11 at the line while Spring Valley was 12-for-17.
Elk Mound
Two-thirds of the way through this past Monday night’s home game versus Elk Mound, Boyceville had scored just eight points and found itself down by 16 points.
The Bulldogs did rally a bit in the final six minutes of the first half, but still trailed 30-17 at halftime.
Boyceville’s offense did come around in the second half as it scored 30 points, but Elk Mound, who tallied the first eight points following the intermission, netted 42 en route to the 72-47 win.
Carson Roemhild and Tegan Lydon were the only Bulldogs to finish in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Elk Mound, who moved into a three-way tied with Spring Valley and Durand-Arkansaw with the victory, had four players finish in double digits. Seniors Logan Jerome and Cale Knutson led the way. Jerome scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half while Knutson canned four of the Mounders’ nine triples to finish with 20 points. Freshman Zeb Robinson sank three from beyond the arc to tally 12 and senior post player Victor Noller scored 11 points.
Elk Mound took just seven foul shots, but connected on five of them.
Boyceville was 7-for-13 at the line and had four triples.
