After dropping its first five games of the season, the Boyceville boys’ basketball team has won two of its past three contests including a split to open the 2025 portion of its schedule.
The Bulldogs split road games last week as it traveled to Independence and Minneapolis, MN in less than 24 hours.
Following their long holiday break, Boyceville tipped off the new year by joining the Lady Bulldogs last Friday, January 3 for a doubleheader against Independence/Gilmanton in Independence. The boys fell short against the Indees, losing the non-conference contest 60-47.
With little time to dwell on the result, the Boyceville boys and girls were back on the bus the next morning as they headed to the Target Center, home of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and WNBA’s Lynx, for yet another non-conference doubleheader, this one against Pepin/Alma. This time, however, the Bulldog boys found themselves on the winning side of a 57-42 final score.
Independence/Gilmanton
Boyceville fell behind early and never fully recovered as it was outscored in both halves of last Friday’s road game and lost 60-47 to the Indees of Independence/Gilmanton.
The Indees led 35-25 at the intermission.
Junior Carson Roemhild tallied 13 points to lead the Bulldogs. Fellow classmate Landyn Leslie netted ten points, all of which came in the second half as he sank a pair of deuces and two triples. Jon Madison finished with eight points and Nate Jensen and Gavin Rydel both scored six points.
The Indees were led by a trio of players in double figures. Nolan Schank finished as the game’s top scorer with 17 points, Carlos Flores added 13 and Payton Hovey chipped in with 11 points.
Boyceville made five threes and were near perfect at the free throw line after it made six of its seven tries. Independence/Gilmanton enjoyed an advantage behind the arc and at the line as it sank five three pointers and went to the charity stripe 18 times where it made 12.
Pepin/Alma
A good start translated into an early lead and an eventual 57-42 victory as the Bulldogs knocked off the Eagles of Pepin/Alma in a non-conference contest played Saturday afternoon, January 4 at the Target Center.
After scoring just two points in the previous day’s loss in Independence, junior Owen Rydel scored ten first-half points including a triple to help lead Boyceville to a 29-18 halftime advantage over Pepin/Alma.
Rydel then hit a pair of threes in the second half and finished with a game-leading 18 to help lift the Bulldogs to the 15-point win. Rydel accounted for three of Boyceville’s seven three pointers.
Jon Madison was a strong presence in the paint and finished with 13 points. Landyn Leslie made a pair of threes and had nine points while Tegan Lydon and Carson Roemhild each had a triple as they finished withnine and six points, respectively.
The Bulldogs went 4-for-9 at the line.
Pepin/Alma stepped to the free throw line 17 times and made six. It also collected four three pointers.
Breckin Hullopete was the only Eagle player to crack double figures as he finished with 17 points.
Boyceville (2-6) will host rival Glenwood City this Friday, January 10 in a Dunn-St. Croix showdown. The boys will host another non-conference game next Monday, January 13 when Cadott comes to the Dog House.
