Boyceville boys lose battle of the Bulldogs, but earn season’s first win against Wolves

Victory eluded the Boyceville boys’ basketball team in its first five games of this season.
After Boyceville remained winless when a close non-conference contest played last Tuesday, December 17 at Chetek-Weyerhaeuser got out of hand in the second half and resulted in a 74-55 set back, the Bulldogs overcame a one-point halftime deficit last Friday, December 20 in Plum City and were able to pull out a 55-50 win against Elmwood-Plum City for their first victory of the 2024-25 hardwood campaign.
With the win, the Bulldogs are now 1-5 as they head into the holiday break. Boyceville will return to action with a pair of non-conference tilts the first week of January. The boys will join the girls’ squad for a doubleheader in Independence on Friday, January 4 before heading to the Twin Cities the following afternoon to play a game at the Target Center, home of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, versus Pepin/Alma.
Chetek-Weyerhaeuser
Boyceville made five, first-half threes including three by freshman Tegan Lydon to hold a slim two-point halftime advantage over host Chetek-Weyerhaeuser in the December 17 non-conference contest.
Lydon made two more triples in the second half to finish with five of Boyceville’s eight, three-point makes and a team-high 20 points, but its was enough as Chetek-Weyerhaeuser nearly doubled up Boyceville, outscoring its visitor 43 to 22 over the final 18 minutes of action to claim a 74-55 victory in the “Battle of the Bulldogs”.
Lydon had 13 points in the opening half to lead Boyceville to a 33-31 lead at the intermission. Carson Roemhild contributed eight points in the opening half for Boyceville with a trio of deuces and a two-for-two effort at the line. Landyn Leslie and Owen Rydel each had a trey.
Roemhild added his own three in the second half along with another two-point bucket and was 1-of-2 at the charity stripe to finish with 14 points.
Rydel added two baskets to finish with nine points and John Madison, who had two first-half hoops went 4-for-4 at the line in the second half and finished with eight points.
Chetek-Weyerhaeuser also made five three points shots in the first half and added another four in the second stanza as they pulled away from Boyceville for the win.
After scoring nine points before halftime which included a triple, C-W’s Bryce Killoren sank two more three-point shots, four deuces and both of his free throws to finish with a game-high 26 points. Teammate Brady Lentz, who had all three of his treys in the opening half, tallied 17 points, Brodrick Olson had a three and finished with nine and Conner Hanson chipped in with seven to help the hosts outscore Boyceville by 21 points in the second half.
Jon Madison topped the rebounding chart for Boyceville with seven, Carson Roemhild had five and Tegan Lydon and Blaine Severson chipped in with four each. Landyn Leslie led with five assists and Lydon had four.
Boyceville was 9-for-18 at the free throw line while Chetek-Weyerhaeuser made nine of its 14 charity shots.
Elmwood-Plum City
Boyceville used a strong-second half performance to turn a one-point halftime deficit into a 55-50 win, its first of the season, when it visited Plum City Friday, December 20 and defeated the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City.
Landyn Leslie and Jon Madison led the Bulldogs to victory in the second half. Leslie scored ten of his 14 game points including a pair of triples in that period and Madison, who had four baskets in the first half, added four more in the latter and was two-for-two at the free throw line as he finished with a team-leading 18 points.
Those tallies along with 13 points from Owen Rydel who also had a pair of threes – one in each half helped Boyceville offset a 26-point performance by the Wolves’ top scorer Lucas Glaus. Landen McDonough was the only other E-PC player to hit double figures as he finished with ten points.
Both teams hits five three-point baskets.
Boyceville shot just 40 percent at the line making only six of its 15 foul shots while Elmwood-Plum City took just seven free throws, but made five.
