After dropping its conference opener in Colfax the previous week, the Boyceville girls’ basketball team literally jumped from the frying pan and into the fire as it had to host the vaunted Mounders, the conference’s two-time defending champions, in its very next contest.
Elk Mound struck quickly and often when it visited Boyceville Tuesday, December 10 and built a large first-half advantage before cruising to a 59-30 win.
Three days later, despite it being Friday the 13th, the Bulldogs had a much better outcome as they snared their first conference win when they traveled to Elmwood to tip-off against the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City. A strong defensive showing in the first half helped carry Boyceville to a 41-29 road win.
The Bulldogs took on Lake Holcombe at home Monday in a non-conference game and will welcome the rival Hilltoppers to the Dog House Thursday before heading into the holiday break.
Elk Mound
A blistering fast start by the Elk Mound doomed Boyceville in its Dunn-St. Croix Conference girls’ basketball game versus the defending champs.
The unbeaten Lady Mounders sprinted to a 32-10 halftime lead as they went on to claim a 59-30 win in the Tuesday, December 10 contest that was played on the Bulldogs’ home court.
Although Elk Mound took its foot off the offensive accelerator in the second half, the Mounders still outscored the host Bulldogs 27-20 to secure the 29-point victory.

Boyceville freshman Blake Jeske was the only Bulldog to score in double digits as she finished with 15 points which included a 7-for-8 effort at the charity stripe to account for all of Boyceville’s free throw opportunities. Fellow freshman, Brooklyn Talmage, added five points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, Chelsi Holden contributed five rebounds and four points and Aubrey Malean snared nine boards.
The Bulldogs shot just under 30 percent, as they finished 11-for-37 which included a 1-for-8 effort behind the three-point arc.
Three Mounder players scored double figures in the contest. Senior Allie Roder tallied 16 points to lead all scorers. Junior Allie Robel contributed 14 points and senior Ellie Schiszik finished with a dozen points which included two of the Mounders three triples.
Elk Mound finished with a 35 to 29 advantage in rebounding.
Elmwood-Plum City
A solid first half helped the Bulldogs establish control when they played in Elmwood last Friday, December 13.
Boyceville allowed Elmwood-Plum City just seven points in the first 18 minutes of play. Meanwhile, despite some offensive struggles of their own, the Bulldogs’ offense managed to put 21 points on the scoreboard during that span. Blake Jeske scored eight of her 11 points in that first half as fellow freshman, Brooklyn Talmage, added five points including what was the Bulldogs’ lone triple of the game.
The Wolves did outscore the Bulldogs in the second stanza, albeit by two points, 22-20, but it wasn’t enough to erase Boyceville’s commanding halftime advantage. The final score read Boyceville 41, Elmwood-Plum City 29.
Junior Aubrey Malean scored seven points in the second half to tie Jeske with a team-high of 11 points. Talmage finished with eight and Zoey Hellendrung tallied six.
Boyceville had a strong evening on the boards as it collected 37 rebounds. Hellendrung and Talmage each finished with nine to top the Bulldogs, Jeske had eight, Malean seven and Ellie Engeman collected four. Jeske led in assists with three and Malean had seven steals.
Although the Bulldogs won the game, they did not shoot the ball particularly well against the Wolves. Boyceville finished just 18-for-68 shooting including a 1-for-14 performance behind the arc. The Bulldogs also made just five of their 13 free throws
Aurora Sampair led the Wolves with ten points. E-PC finished 4-for-9 at the line.
