MENOMONIE —Playing in a Saturday matinée at UW-Stout’s Northwest Tip-off Classic Saturday afternoon, December 7, the Colfax boys’ basketball team gave up an early lead and struggled at the free throw line, resulting in a 60-59 loss to the Lakeland East Conference Clear Lake Lakers.
Things couldn’t have started any better for the Vikings as they appeared to have a blowout in the making when they took a 16-0 lead. But, the Lakers didn’t panic and pecked away at the Colfax lead and the first half ended with Colfax up 30-28. Aiden Fischer and Russell Polkoski both collected 11 points in the half to lead the Vikings.
The second half was close throughout and came down to the last second. The Vikings were down by a point with a chance to win or tie but two free throws were off the mark, ending the game.
Colfax knocked down ten, three-point shots in the game but made just 3-of-13 free throws. According to head coach Nick Heit, the team also missed a lot of layups which would have helped their cause.
Fischer led the Vikings with 26 points with three of the team’s triples and the only three free throws of the game. Orion Nichols added 14 points which included four treys with three in the second half and Polkoski also scored 14 points for the game.
The boys will play on the road the rest of December. They were in Amery last night, play the conference opener in Boyceville Thursday and go to Spring Valley next Tuesday, December 17.
