The Boyceville girls basketball team played three road games last week, but came away with just a single win.
The Bulldogs traveled to Webster, for a doubleheader with the boys’ team, on Tuesday, December 3. But, much like their previous contest in Shell Lake, Boyceville fell behind early and lost to the Tigers 61-42.
Boyceville then made back-to-back trips to Colfax.
The first one came Thursday, December 5 when the Bulldogs played the Vikings in both teams’ Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener. Despite keeping the game close in the first half, Colfax pulled away after the intermission for a 54-27 win.
Two days later, Boyceville returned to the Vikings’ gym for an early morning contest versus Osseo-Fairchild in the opening contest of the annual Western Wisconsin Girls’ Basketball Classic that featured teams from the Dunn-St. Croix and Cloverbelt West Conferences. Deadlocked at halftime, the Bulldogs pulled ahead in the second half and won by ten points, 56-46.
Boyceville, 0-1, 2-3, hosted Elk Mound Tuesday and will be in Elmwood this Thursday to take on the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City. Next Monday, Lake Holcombe visits the Dog House.
Webster
For the second straight game, the Boyceville girls dug themselves an early hole that proved just too deep to dig themselves out of when they made the long trip to Webster December 3.
A slow start put the Bulldogs behind by 17 points at halftime – 38 to 21.
Boyceville played better, especially on the defensive end, in the second half, but still managed just 21 points as they suffered a 61-42 setback to the Tigers.
Brooklyn Talmage led the Boyceville scorers with 12 points and Zoey Hellendrung added ten points.
Webster had three players in double figures. Elle Treague finished with 17 points, Avery Hetfeld collected 16 and Reese Grindell had 14.
Colfax
In the Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener for both teams, the Lady Vikings opened the second half with an 18-point run that left the Lady Bulldogs in a hole too big to dig out of, resulting in a 54-27 win for Colfax in the game played Tuesday, December 3 in Colfax.
Colfax jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before Brooklyn Talmage drained a triple and Chelsi Holden hit a free toss for Boyceville to cut the Viking lead to 7-6. After Kaysen Goodell scored on a drive through the lane, Colfax upped their lead to 9-6 and Talmage knotted the score with another shot from behind the arc.
Colfax committed their seventh foul with around five minutes left in the half, allowing Aubrey Malean to hit a free toss and complete a three-point play after the bucket for a 12-9 Bulldog advantage.
The lead didn’t last long however as Goodell scored on another drive and Sierra Shipman canned a trey to put Colfax in front 14-12.
Zoey Hellendrung dropped in a free throw and Malean added two more free tosses for Boyceville, but the Viking’s Jordyn Bowe scored on a fast break in between to keep the score close at 16-15. Shipman added another deuce and Goodell drilled a three point shot before Blake Jeske scored in the paint for Boyceville, and Bowe finished off the first half with a bucket for a 23-17 Colfax lead.
Colfax coach Courtney Sarauer must have given her team a pretty strong talking to at the break as the Vikings came out and scored 18 consecutive points. Their full court press led to several turnovers by Boyceville which led to offense for the Vikings.
Shipman started the streak with a shot in the paint and Goodell added the next seven points on two layups with a triple in between. Brynn Sikora connected from behind the arc, Goodell scored on yet another layup, Ady Acker came up big with her first varsity points with a triple and Bowe dropped in a free throw for a 41-17 Viking lead.
Blake Jeske finally stopped the bleeding for the Bulldogs with a bucket late in the half but the Vikings continued to score in the paint and put the game away.
Colfax had a balanced attack in the scoring department, led by Goodell with 18, Shipman 12, Bowe 11 and Sikora seven. Malean led Boyceville with nine points while Talmage added eight.
“We played a competitive first half with them,” stated Boyceville head coach Jay Lagerstrom.
“But, when Colfax found their way offensively we just didn’t answer,” he added.
Osseo-Fairchild
Boyceville had little time to dwell on the loss to the Vikings as they had to return to Colfax on Saturday for an 8:30 a.m. tip-off against Osseo-Fairchild in what was the opening contest of the 2024 Western Wisconsin Girls’ Basketball Classic.
The score was tied 25 all at halftime, but the Bulldogs were able to get some separation following the break.
Blake Jeske scored ten of her team-high 18 points in the second half. Ellie Engeman scored eight in the final half while Aubrey Malean and Brooklyn Talmage both netted six second-half points as all three finished with ten points to help the Bulldogs outpoint the Thunder, 31-21, in the final 18 minutes to take a 56-46 victory.
“I was feeling pretty good with the situation at half as the game was tied but we were getting a lot of good looks and I felt it was just a matter of time before the shots started to drop,” said Lagerstrom.
Jeske also led the team with 15 rebounds, Malean added nine rebounds and six assists. Talmage finished with seven boards and Chelsi Holden had six boards.
