TURTLE LAKE — It certainly wasn’t how Boyceville wanted to start its wrestling season.
The Bulldogs finished 0-4 in the five-school, Turtle Lake/Clayton Dual Invitational held last Friday, December 6.
Boyceville lost 64-18 to Osceola, 48-36 to Phillips, 39-36 to host Turtle Lake/Clayton and 46-24 to Northwestern.
Osceola won the dual tournament with a 4-0 record, Northwestern placed second at 3-1, followed by Phillips at 2-2, Turtle Lake/Clayton was fourth with a 1-3 mark and Boyceville finished fifth.
While team success eluded Boyceville, some of its individual wrestlers performed well and finished with winning records.
Junior Zach Hellendrung was the Bulldogs only unbeaten wrestled in last Friday’s competition. Wrestling at 285 pounds, Hellendrung finished 4-0 with a pair of pins and two forfeits.
Three other wrestlers finished with 3-1 marks at Turtle Lake High School. Mark Knopps had two pins among his three victories at 175 pounds. At 138 pounds, Victor Pattermann also won two of his three matches by fall. Isaiah Romero picked up three wins at 215 pounds including two via fall.
Liam Moore (190) and Lexton Benitz (144) finished the evening at 2-2. Kayla Frett won two matches at 106 pounds by forfeit.
In the opening dual, Boyceville surrendered five falls and gave up six forfeits to Osceola who prevailed 64-18. Boyceville’s points came via pins by Mark Knopps (175) and Liam Moore (190) and a forfeit to Hellendrung (285).
Against Phillips, Boyceville registered pins by Pattermann (138), Knopps (175) and Romero (215) and was awarded three forfeits. Phillips had four pins and received an equal number of forfeits to earn the victory.
Boyceville’s dual versus host Turtle Lake/Clayton was its closes of the tournament. Trailing 27-12, the Bulldogs received back-to-back forfeits at 190 and 215 pounds, then got a pin from Hellendrung at heavyweight and another forfeit at 106 to take a 36-27 advantage. The Lakers, however, won the final two matches – one via forfeit and the other on a pin, to pull out a three-point victory.
In their final dual, Boyceville alternated wins with Northwestern through the first six matches before getting consecutive pin falls by Romero and Hellendrung at 215 and 285 pounds, respectively, to take a 24-16 lead. But, the Tigers won the final five weight classes – four via forfeits and the other on a pin – to rally for a 46-24 win.
Boyceville goes to Clear Lake for a dual this Thursday before going to the Wisconsin Dells for a dual tournament at the Woodside Center.
