The Boyceville Bulldogs boys’ basketball team opened its 2024-25 campaign with a flurry of games. Three road games in five days to open the season would test the Bulldogs mettle right out of the chute.
While Boyceville keep the games close in the first half of all three games, their opponents outscored them in the second half of all three contest as the Bulldogs dropped to 0-3 on the early season.
Boyceville opened action traveling to Webster on December 3. The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs by 12 in the second half to secure the 60-46 victory on the night.
Two days later the Bulldogs headed north to Shell Lake for their second game of the year. Boyceville held a one-point advantage at intermission but fell by two points to the Lakers at 48-46.
They wrapped their busy first week up traveling to Menomonie for a contest against Stanley-Boyd at the UW-Stout Fieldhouse. While the Bulldogs kept the score close in the opening 18 minutes, the long week caught up with them as they were outscored 29 to 15 in the second half to drop the game 57-35.
Boyceville returns to action on Thursday December 12 with their home opener with hopes of securing their first win against conference foe Colfax. The Vikings sit at 0-2 with opening week losses to Chippewa Falls McDonell and at Clear Lake.
Webster
The first half proved to be a tight matchup between the Bulldogs and the Tigers. Webster’s Quinn Widiker proved to be a force inside the paint as the forward scored ten of the Tigers 31 points in the opening frame. Guard Cody McDowell was close behind with eight points, including two from beyond the arc.
The Bulldogs countered with their own inside/outside duo. Junior Jon Madison paced Boyceville’s first half offense with 13 points, which included six field goals. Freshman Tegan Lydon added nine in the first frame, including three field goals and 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
The 21 combined points from the Bulldog twosome kept Boyceville in the game as they went into intermission down a basket at 31-29.
The second half was not as kind to the Bulldog shooters. Combined the team only made six field goals, including a single 3-pointer by Lydon, en route to a 17-point performance post-half time.

Meanwhile the Tigers put up 29 second half points, including four 3-pointers, as they cruised to the 60-46 win.
Madison added a bucket in the second half to push his total to a team high 15 on the night. Lydon was right behind with 14 points. Carson Roemhild led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds.
Shell Lake
Coming off the Webster game where the Bulldogs shot a combined 18-of-53 on the night they were looking to start strong, and strong they did start. Roemhild and Lydon both drained three 3-pointers and notched ten points apiece in the first half. Blaine Severson added five first half points as the Bulldogs went into intermission up a single point at 30-29.
Like their first game of the season, the Bulldogs struggled offensively in the second half. They managed only six field goals in the second half accounting for 16 points.
Conversely, Shell Lake eked out 19 second half points to push past the battling Bulldogs to pull of the 48-46 win and hand the Bulldogs their second straight loss where they scored 46 points.
Boyceville showed a slight improvement shooting 17-of-51 from the field, including 10-of-33 from beyond the arc.
Lydon and Roemhild combined for nine 3-pointers on the night and scored 17 and 14 points, respectively. For the second straight game, Roemhild lead the team in rebounds with nine.
Stanley-Boyd
Boyceville concluded their week with a contest against the Orioles at the UW-Stout Northwest Tip-Off Classic. The three games appeared to take their toll on Boyceville as the team managed to hit only 11 total field goals on the night while giving up 55 points to Stanley-Boyd in a 55-35 loss.
Owen Rydel attempted to keep his squad in the game in the first half, notching seven points. However, five first half 3-pointers by the Orioles helped Stanley-Boyd go into intermission with the 28-20 advantage.
The second half witnessed Boyceville hit more free throws, seven, then field goals, four, as they managed to put up only 15 points post-intermission. Conversely Stanley-Boyd almost doubled the Bulldog output and scored 29 second half points as they cruised to the 57-35 win.
Rydel was the only Bulldog in double figures on the night with ten points. Roemhild added seven points and Madison put in six to round out the top scorers for Boyceville.
