THE COLFAX BOYS’ basketball team will look to improve on last season’s 9-16 finish. COLFAX — After finishing 6-8 in Dunn-St. Croix Conference play and 9-16 overall last season, the Colfax boys basketball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Nick Heit, will be working to move closer to the top in the conference this year.
After working as an assistant coach for several years with the Vikings, Heit is replacing Mark Noll who had a record of 37-57 in his four years of leading the Vikings.
Heit will have to replace four players through graduation including Elijah Entzminger, a career 1,000-point scorer, long-range shooters Mason Yarrington and Blake Johnson along with post player Eli Ralph.
Experienced players back are seniors Aiden Fischer who was the second leading scorer for the team, Logan Swartz and Theo Hovde as well as junior Orion Nichols. Other players expected to help out the varsity are junior Charlie Charbonneau, sophomore Trey Larson and freshman Russell Polkoski.
Heit will look for team defense to be successful since they have length with two players standing 6’ 6” and 6’ 5” but lack of team depth may be a problem.
Goals for the season are to find an identity and be competitive. The Vikings have a tough non-conference schedule that will help the team grow to find success in the playoffs and Heit is hopeful the Vikings can compete for the top four spots in the conference.
Heit believes Durand-Arkansaw, Spring Valley and Elk Mound should all be contenders for a conference championship this year. Durand-Arkansaw has size and good guard play and are well coached, Spring Valley is well coached and has the best player in the league and they are very physical while Elk Mound has length, good shooting ability and their new coach will have them prepared.
Colfax hosted Chippewa Falls McDonell Central last evening, Tuesday, November 26, for the season and home opener.
