THE COLFAX girls’ basketball team looks to continue its winning ways this coming season. The Vikings return one senior and five juniors. COLFAX — After losing five players through graduation with all of them starting last season, the Lady Vikings return one senior and five juniors who were all letter winners to lead the basketball team this year.
The Vikings finished 17-9 overall last season and tied for second with Durand-Arkansaw in Dunn-St. Croix Conference play behind two-time conference champion Elk Mound. They ended their season with a regional final loss to Fall Creek.
Filling the shoes of those players from last year won’t be an easy task, however.
McKenna Shipman was a Dunn-St. Croix all conference player several years as well as the “Player of the Year” and concluded her career as a 1,000-point scorer to lead the Vikings in the scoring department. She was also the leading rebounder for the Vikings. Jeanette Hydukovich was a second-team all conference pick and was the third leading scorer, second in rebounding and second in assists while Jada Anderson, Meadow Keltner and Jaycey Bowe were all excellent ball handlers and defensive specialists for the team.
Senior guard Kaysen Goodell, a second-team all-conference selection returns as the leader in assists and steals as well as the second leading scorer with an 8.5 points per game (ppg) average. Juniors back are Brynn Sikora with a 5.0 ppg average, sharp shooter Jordyn Bowe, who knocked down 16 three-point shots as a sophomore, along with Leila Hurlburt, Clara Hydukovich and Sierra Shipman.
Head coach Courtney Sarauer returns to lead the Vikings for her fifth season, bringing a 74-23 record with her. She believes Durand-Arkansaw and Elk Mound will once again be strong contenders for a conference title since both of them have a lot of varsity players returning.
The Colfax girls opened the season last evening, November 19, at Eau Claire Regis. The Vikings home opener is slated for this Friday, November 22 versus Baldwin-Woodville.
