WISCONSIN RAPIDS — Colfax senior Kaysen Goodell finished her high school cross country career at the WIAA state cross country championships in Wisconsin Rapids last Saturday. She placed 67th out of 147 runners in the girls’ Division 3 state race.
“It is a great place to end a great career at the state meet. The state meet is incredibly exciting and challenging,” said Colfax head cross country coach Joe Doucette.
Goodell is no stranger to the state meet. In fact, this was the fourth time she’s ran there, qualifying twice with a team and twice as an individual runner. She’s also a conference champion, a four-time all-conference recipient which includes three first-team awards.
“We are very proud of Kaysen, she is one of the best we have ever had,” said Doucette.
Goodell ran the 5K race at the Ridges Golf Course in 21 minutes 19.7 seconds. Senior Mallory Kohn from Dodgeland won the race with a time of 18:08.4.
“As always, Kaysen gave great effort but could not duplicate her races at conference and sectionals. She wanted to run a touch better at state but went out hard and gave great effort,” said Doucette.
Goodell won the Dunn-St. Croix conference meet held last month in Boyceville with a time of 20:34.78 and placed third at the sectional meet with a personal best time of 20:02.2.
“She always gives 100 percent. She is a great teammate, not afraid of any workout or challenge,” said Doucette.
This season the Vikings had low numbers in the sport with just four runners for the girls and oftentimes just four in the boys competition as well.
“Hopefully we can get some more kids there soon,” said Doucette of the state meet.
The team from Kohler won the girls’ division 3 state championship trophy with a score of 95 and a team from the Cedar Grove-Belgium school district won the boys’ state team title with a score of 98. Declan Gregg, a senior from Aquinas High School in La Crosse, won the boys’ D3 individual state crown with a time of 15:52.7.
