You can call them champions once again!
The Colfax-Elk Mound girl golfers claimed their second straight CloverCroix Conference championship last week with a trio of convincing wins.
Colfax-Elk Mound swept the conference’s nine-hole mini-meets with a pair of back-to-back victories Tuesday, September 24. Competing at Whispering Pines Golf Course in Cadott that morning, the locals chalked up the win. Then traveling to Osseo Golf Course in the afternoon, Colfax-Elk Mound finished off the CloverCroix slate unbeaten as they won yet again.
Two days later, at the Lake Hallie Golf Course, Colfax-Elk Mound won back-to-back CloverCroix Conference tournaments in record-setting fashion. The girls defeated runner-up Bloomer by 67 strokes to earn its second tournament and overall conference titles in as many years.
“Yesterday marked the end of an historic CloverCroix Conference season for our girls,” wrote head coach Ryan Krall in a post on the team’s Facebook page. “Overall season championship, Conference Championship victory (by 65 shots!) with a new Program Record 18-hole score, and all five team members earning all-conference recognition.”
“While we would like to enjoy this one for as long as possible, Regionals awaits. What a performance today…and what a group of young ladies,” he concluded.
Colfax-Elk Mound will compete in the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament hosted by Chetek-Weyerhaeuser at Rice Lake’s Turtleback Golf Course this Thursday, October 3. The C-EM girls easily won a recent pre-regional tournament at Turtleback that featured all of this week’s regional participants.
The sectional meet will be held next Monday, October 7th at the Luck Golf Course. The state meet is set for October 14 and 15 in Verona.
Whispering Pines
The CloverCroix Conference wrapped up its scheduled mini meets with a doubleheader last Tuesday, September 24.
The five member schools opened play in the morning at Whispering Pines Golf Course in Cadott.
Colfax-Elk Mound overcame a very difficult course at Whispering Pines to earn another conference win.
The girls finished with 203 strokes in the nine-hole meet, 13 ahead of runner-up Bloomer. Stanley-Boyd took third with a 252 while Osseo-Fairchild and Mondovi did not field the required five golfers to receive a team score.
Defending state champion Belle Kongshaug continued to dominate conference play. The junior won medalist honors with a score of 37 and finished six strokes ahead of runner-up Alexis Ness of Osseo-Fairchild.
Fellow junior Gabi Amble took third for Colfax-Elk Mound after shooting a 46.
Freshman Izzy Ludwig finished with a 57, junior Isabelle Baier carded a 63 and freshman Annika Niska tallied a 67 for C-EM.
Osseo
After finishing the meet at Whispering Pines last Tuesday, the CloverCroix squads traveled to the Osseo Golf Course for the final mini-meet of the season.
The quick turnaround and travel did not seem to bother Colfax-Elk Mound who shot a 191 to win the afternoon meet.
Bloomer placed second with a 199, Stanley-Boyd had a 236 and Mondovi finished with a 277. Host Osseo-Fairchild had an incomplete team and thus, did not pick up a team score.
Kongshaug was the top individual golfer in Osseo as she netted a 38, nine strokes ahead of O-F’s Ness who shot a 47.
Two other Colfax-Elk Mound golfers, Freshman Izzy Ludwig and junior Gabi Amble, finished in the top ten. Both Ludwig and Amble tallied 48s to finish in a tie for fifth place along with Bloomer’s Illa Nelson.
Freshman Annika Niska took 12th for C-EM after hitting for a 57 and junior Isabelle Baier shot a 58 to finish 13th.
