A record-breaking performance helped the Colfax-Elk Mound girls’ golf team move closer to securing its second straight CloverCroix Conference championship.
In a busy week that saw the squad compete in three events including a pair of conference meets at the Valley Golf Course in Mondovi, Colfax-Elk Mound set a new team record as it finished with score of 190 in CloverCroix Conference mini-meet #7 (nine holes) last Tuesday, September 17. The effort came just one day after the local ladies captured the top spot in the 18-hole Regional Preview meet at the Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake, which is the site of this year’s Division 2 regional meet. All seven schools that will compete that WIAA regional meet in a few weeks’ time were represented in the September 16 event.
Colfax-Elk Mound also played in another conference meet in Mondovi on Thursday, September 19, but results for that nine-hole event were not available as of Monday afternoon’s publication deadline.
It will be another busy week as Colfax-Elk Mound will wrap up its regular season with three conference gathers – a pair of nine-hole mini-mets at Whispering Pines Golf Course in Cadott and at the Osseo Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday, September 23 and 24, respectively, and the 18-hole conference tournament this Thursday, September 26 at the Lake Hallie Golf Course.
The WIAA tournament is set for Thursday, October 3 at Turtleback in Rice Lake.
Turtleback Regional Preview
The five CloverCroix Conference teams – Colfax-Elk Mound, Bloomer, Stanley-Boyd, Osseo-Fairchild and Mondovi –joined Chetek-Weyerhaeuser and Ladysmith for a preview meet of the upcoming WIAA Division 2 regional tournament at the Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake September 16.
Colfax-Elk Mound easily won the seven-team event, a feat it hopes to repeat at the October 3rd regional, by 35 strokes over runner-up and conference mate Bloomer. The locals shot a 393, Bloomer tallied a 427, Ladysmith finished with a 489, Chetek-Weyerhaeuser carded a 503, and Stanley-Boyd had a 516. Osseo-Fairchild and Mondovi did not have complete squads so neither was eligible to receive a team score for placement.
Colfax-Elk Mound juniors Belle Kongshaug and Gabi Amble finished one and two on the individual leader board. Kongshaug won the event with a 18-hole score of 78 and Amble took second with a 90.
Also competing for the local squad were freshman Izzy Ludwig with a 111, junior Isabelle Baier with a 114 and freshman Annika Niska who scored a 123.
Mondovi Meet
The following day, Tuesday, September 17, the five CloverCroix teams convened at the Valley Golf Course in Mondovi for conference mini-meet #7.
Less than two weeks after setting a program scoring record, Colfax-Elk Mound broke it with a team tally of 190 to win another conference meet and move ever closer to claiming a second straight conference championship.
“The girls played great last night in Mondovi,” said head coach Ryan Krall of the September 17 competition. “We set a new all-time best 9-hole score in Colfax-Elk Mound girls golf history.”
Junior Belle Kongshaug kept her win streak intact as she captured the top spot with a 9-hole score of 36. Fellow classmate and teammate Gabi Amble tied for second with a 44.
Other finishers for Colfax-Elk Mound were freshmen Izzy Ludwig and Annika Niska with a 54 and 56, respectively, and junior Isabelle Baier who shot a 60.
Bloomer had a 206 to finish second, 16 strokes behind C-EM, Stanley-Boyd placed third with a 249, Mondovi shot a 273 to take fourth and Osseo-Fairchild had an incomplete score as it did not have the five golfers needed to receive a team score.
“Proud doesn’t begin to describe how I feel about these girls. I couldn’t be more excited for our stretch run ahead!”, concluded Krall.
