BOYCEVILLE — At their meeting held on August 21 the Boyceville School Board learned from Elementary Principal Jerim DesJarlais that 20 new students enrolled at TCE over the summer. During that same time seven students moved fromTCE to different districts.
“It was nice to have a positive (number),” said DesJarlais.
He said that last year at the beginning of the school year TCE had 295 students. This year enrollment is currently at about 329.
Also in his report DesJarlais filled the board in on changes made to classroom schedules. According to his report there will now be 90 minutes of English instruction for all grade levels, 45-60 minutes of math instruction for all grade levels and 70 minutes of English for 4K.
He said the parameters were put in place based on curriculum fidelity parameters and best practice research.
DesJarlais also spoke about planning in regards to act 20. Act 20 has to do with early reading instruction. He said a plan will be built with the English Language Arts committee in September and Theresa Stanley of CESA 11 will assist him in the facilitation and completion of the plan.
“We have to do these things,” he said of act 20.
DesJarlais reported that the Be Team recently met to learn about their expectations and how they can support others at TCE and the greater community. Members signed up to help in various areas of the building and for the Cucumber Fest parade.
With MS/HS Principal Pat Gretzlock and District Special Education Director Rebecca Hanestad both gone at the sixth grade orientation event, Superintendent Nick Kaiser presented his report to the board.
Kaiser said that a district wide open house will be on Thursday, August 22 and two non-mandatory school transition days will be held on August 27 and 28 for students. The first official day of school will be on August 29.
He said the teacher inservice is going well and that the summer work of cleaning and maintaining buildings is almost done.
“We are now getting ready for the start of school. Thank you to our custodians, maintenance people, grounds crew, and all of our year-round staff for your hard work this summer,” said Kaiser.
He reported that referendum work that was scheduled for this summer is winding down and more meetings with CESA 10 are planned as the district narrows down choices for the bidding process later this fall for the projects slated for the summer of 2025.
The board approved hiring several individuals for various coaching vacancies. They approved Keri Peterson and Rochelle Olson as co-varsity volleyball coaches, Cory Day as assistant MS/HS cross country coach, Samantha Bird as dance advisor, and Taylor Grambow as middle school volleyball coach.
Additionally they approved the hiring of Jennifer Link as a part-time TCE paraprofessional.
Hanestad made it to the end of the meeting and submitted the 2023/2024 Seclusion and Restraint Report to the board. The report is sent to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction each year.
Hanestad said that three different students accounted for this year’s report. All of them are elementary students. One of the students was moved to a different learning location after multiple seclusion and restraint incidences. The board approved the report.
In her regular report to the board Hanestad welcomed the new middle school special education teacher Laurie Mumm and thanked the office staff for all their hard work and support to start the year.
She also thanked the staff that organized two very successful Bulldog playgroups this summer and the transition team for meeting and creating a schedule for the transition days.
Hanestad spoke about several trainings that staff attended including the Procedural Compliance Self-Assessment Audit, title IX training and the Para Summit training.
Gretzlock was still at sixth grade orientation when the meeting ended. In his written report to the board he reported on preparations for the start of the school year. He wrote about all the summer referendum work that has been completed and the ongoing planning for more referendum work.
He wrote in his report that he is thankful for the four new staff members and the veteran staff who have agreed to mentor them. He then listed the new staff members and their mentors. They are as follows: Jessica Borchardt: Instrumental Music (& General Music 3-5) – Ben Simmerman; Monica Miranda: Business & Marketing Education – Laura Debee; Laurie Mumm: Middle School Special Education – Jennifer Bignell; Kaitlyn Webster: Agriculture Education & FFA – Frank Fetzer.
In other business the Boyceville School Board:
• Learned from DesJarlais that track camp was a success and students in pre-k through 6th grade competed in a variety of events.
• Learned from Kaiser that the Annual Meeting of the Boyceville Community School District is scheduled for Wednesday, October 9 at 6:00 p.m.
• Heard from Kaiser that the pickle ball court is curing.
• Learned from Gretzlock’s report that BHS will offer nearly 10 dual or transcribed credit courses during the 2024/2025 school year.
