GLENWOOD CITY — Four longtime staff members of the Glenwood City School District have called it a career.
Retiring at the end of this past school year were, Betsy Haltinner, elementary principal; Sherry Crosby, food service coordinator; Tammy Erickson, para educator; and Cindy Cuturia, custodian.
The Tribune Press Reporter sent each retiree a questionnaire and what follows are their responses.
Betsy Haltinner
1. Where are you from originally? Where did you go to school?
I grew up in Appleton, WI and eventually moved to Kimberly, WI. I graduated from Kimberly High School in 1986.
2. How many years did you work at Glenwood City?
I have worked in the Glenwood City School District for 23 years. I started as the Program Coordinator and teacher for the Transitional Skills Center. During my time at GCSD I have taught middle school ELA and also served as the elementary school counselor.
3. Did you work anywhere else before coming to Glenwood City?
I taught Marketing and Business Education at Kimberly High School for 9 years.
4. Why did you decide to go into administration?
I chose to become an administrator to support learning. As an administrator I would be able to work together with teachers to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn and grow!
5. What are some of the changes you have noticed over the years in education in general or how has the school itself changed?
Technology is probably the most significant change and continues to require all to be flexible and adjust! We are so dependent on technology, networks and the internet!
6. What did you like best about working in Glenwood City?
The staff and the community support learning.
7. Tell me about an event or a project or some aspect of your administration/teaching career that you will never forget.
I treasure my time coordinating and teaching in our Transitional Skills Center. The relationships built and successes that occurred as a result of that experience formed much of my philosophy as an administrator. I also am super proud of our elementary staff and their dedication to growing as educators. Always focused on the needs of our students.
8. What will you miss about education and the students?
I will miss the people…. staff, students and families!
9. What are you looking forward to doing after you retire?
We hope to travel, visit family and READ! I also plan to keep putting miles on my bike!
Cindy Cuturia
1. Position with the school district and for how many years?
Custodian and I was here for a year as a substitute custodian in 1995. In 1996 I was hired full time, which was 28 years.
2. Describe your duties. Cleaning rooms, bathrooms, plowing snow, working in the kitchen, running mail from the offices and work rooms, and being on call for teachers that had fun classroom cleanup needs.
3. What are some of the changes you have noticed over the years in the position or the job duties or changes in general?
Turn around with the staff. There is not a lot of veteran staff that have a lot of years here at GC.
4. What did you like best about working in the school district? Why?
It is close to home and being busy, I like busy work.
5. What are you going to miss the most? Why?
My friends I have made and the YaYa’s!
6. Tell me about something memorable that happened while you were on the job.
Odd the predicaments the kids get themselves into, like a finger in a pencil sharpener, a spiral notebook wire up a kid’s nose, having a skunk in the building and the DNR having to come take care of it. There are several stores but those stand out the most.
7. What are you looking forward to doing in your retirement?
Relaxing and spending more time up north!
Tammy Erickson
1. Position with the school district and for how many years?
Special Education Paraprofessional – 27 years
Driver for special needs students
2. Describe your duties.
I have picked up and dropped off students who cannot ride the bus for many years. While working in the ARCC (Alternative Resource Curriculum Classroom) my duties include, reading, science and math with students. I have also worked on Social studies lessons and leading baking and cooking classes in the classroom. Sometimes I would help in regular education classrooms supporting students during their classes. Taking students to Art, Music, Phy Ed and Band has been such fun! Watching students learn and grow, has been the best part of my job duties.
3. What are some of the changes you have noticed over the years in the position or the job duties or changes in general?
Technology has been the biggest change! Having technology in our classroom has helped our students greatly. Working with students who are non-verbal and them having their own communication devices has opened up their world even more.
4. What did you like best about working in the school district? Why?
I grew up and went to school in Glenwood City and so did my children. Being here at school and working while they were here, was wonderful. I didn’t miss anything!
5. What are you going to miss the most? Why?
I will miss being with my co-workers and of course our students. Working in the ARCC has been an experience everyone should have. Watching these students learn, grow and achieve is the best feeling I could have had as a paraprofessional. My co-workers are the most supportive, kind and hardest workers. That goes for EVERYONE that works in the Glenwood City School District.
6. Tell me about something memorable that happened while you were on the job.
So many great memories here in Glenwood City Schools. From pep fests celebrating our teams or individual athletes, winning state championships, helping a student walk across the stage at graduation and just everyday student success. Too many memories that I will cherish.
7. What are you looking forward to doing in your retirement?
I am looking forward to doing some traveling, spending time with family and just not having to get up early every day. I am also hoping to do some volunteer work and I will sub at school for the next year.
