LA CROSSE — Boyceville High School senior Caden Wold is a state champion.
Despite some rainy conditions, Wold won the boys’ Division three long jump event Saturday at the 2024 WIAA State Track and Field Championships which were held at Veterans’ Memorial Field Complex in La Crosse on Friday and Saturday, May 31 and June 1.
Wold leaped 22 feet 10.75 inches to captured the state gold medal.
Wold’s state-winning jump broke a BHS school record which was set by him a year ago when he placed second in the state long jump competition with a jump of 22 feet 7 inches. Prior to that, the previous long jump BHS record holder was Robbie Bosshart who jumped 21 feet 5 inches in 1981.
On the opening day of this year’s state meet, Wold also competed in the triple jump but it didn’t quite go as planned as he scratched on all three of his attempts and did not earn a place.

“The triple jump didn’t go as planned on day one. Caden came back strong and mentally tough on day two and won the long jump. Boyceville has a new state champion!” said Joan Klassen, Boyceville head track and field coach.
In all, four Boyceville track and field athletes competed at the state championship after qualifying at the WIAA division three track and field regional and sectional meets held the prior two weeks. In addition to Wold, seniors Peter Wheeldon and JJ Kurschner and sophomore Jon Madison also competed at state.
“The athletes went down [to La Crosse] and had their best performances of the year. That’s all we could ask for,” said Klassen.

Their time was 1 minute 32.23 seconds, almost a full second faster than their time at the sectional meet. Their sectional meet time was 1 minute 33.3 seconds which also broke a BHS school record, held by quartet.
“It was a little heartbreaking to miss meddling in the 4×200 meter relay by one hundredth of a second!” Klassen noted.
The sixth place finishers hailed from Bangor and had a time of 1 minute 32.22 seconds. Medals are awarded to the top six finishers at state with team points awarded through eighth place.
Kurschner also competed in the 200 meter dash. He placed ninth in Friday’s preliminary heat with a time of 23.32 seconds, but did not advance to finals.
With the ten team points Wold was awarded for his state championship victory in the long jump and the two points earned by placing seventh in the 4×200 meter relay, Boyceville finished in a tie for 20th place in the final D3 boys’ state team standings along with Coleman, Living Word Lutheran, Kewaunee and Athens after each tallied a dozen points.
