Five Bulldogs qualify for state track meet, Caden Wold wins long and triple jumps

CAMERON — Five Boyceville track and field athletes will be heading to the state championship in La Crosse this weekend after qualifying at the WIAA Division 3 track and field sectional meet held in Cameron last Thursday, May 23.
Bulldog senior Caden Wold placed first in the long jump and triple jump events. In the long jump, he jumped 21 feet 1.75 inches, nearly six inches farther than the second-place finisher. In the triple jump, Wold leaped 43 feet 4.5 inches, more than a foot farther than his nearest competition. Wold also finished sixth in the 100 meter dash.
Wold along with Jon Madison, Peter Wheeldon and JJ Kurschner are members of the 4×200 relay team which earned a berth to the state competition by placing third in the Cameron meet with a time of 1 minute 33.3 seconds. Regis won the event with a time of 1 minute 30.98 seconds.

Kurschner, who is a senior, qualified for state in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.32 seconds. His time earned him third place in the event. The top two finishers ran the race in 23.14 and 22.48 seconds.
Senior Peter Wheeldon ran in a pair of individual events in Cameron as well. He took seventh int he 200 meters and finished ninth int he 110 meter high hurdles. Freshman Liam Moore-Girard finished 13th in the discus throw.
In order to qualify for the state meet athletes have to place fourth or higher at the sectional meet. None of the Boyceville girls managed to achieve this requirement.
The Lady Bulldogs’ highest finish at the sectional meet was turned in by sophomore Halle Tonn who placed seventh in the pole vault with a personal best of nine feet six inches. Sophomore Ashlyn Maska took 11th in the 1,600 meter run, freshman Sydney Larson was 13th in the 300 m low hurdles and senior Jaden Steven placed 14th in the 400 meter dash. The girls’ 4×400 meter relay team finished eighth.
In the boys competition Grantsburg took first out of 37 teams with a score of 53. The Boyceville boys placed 7th in the competition earning 37 points.
With the top eight finishes in each event earning team points, The 4×400 meter squad and Halle Tonn helped the Lady Bulldogs score three points which tied them with Rib Lake and Unity for 33rd place out of 36 teams. The Fall Creek girls won with 72 points.
The WIAA state championship will be held in La Crosse this Friday and Saturday, May 31 and June 1.
