ELK MOUND — Instead of using a credit card for some purchases, the Elk Mound school district will now be using a “purchasing card” issued through Bremer Bank.
The Elk Mound Board of Education approved the purchasing card at the May 20 meeting.
The “P-card” can be used for almost all purchases, including everyday expenses, that the school district makes, said Eric Wright, district administrator.
The card reduces opportunities for fraud and has the potential for the school district to receive “cash back” after a certain amount has been spent, he said.
In addition to reducing the opportunity for fraud, the purchasing card will reduce the number of checks that will have to be written out by the school district, Wright said.
Wright has been researching the purchasing card issued through Bremer Bank for several months.
At the March Board of Education meeting, Wright introduced the possibility of using the purchasing card and said he would continue to gather information and would bring additional information to a future board meeting.
Open enrollment
At the May 20 meeting, the Elk Mound Board of Education also approved applications for open enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year.
There are 47 new applications to open enroll into the school district and seven new applications to open enroll out of the school district, Wright said.
Last year, there were 40 new applications to open enroll into the district and 19 applications to open enroll out of the district, he said.
The number of applications to open enroll into the school district has increased, and the number of applications to open enroll out of the school district has decreased, Wright noted.
The exact number of students who will be open enrolling into the school district and out of the school district will not be know until school starts next fall, he said, pointing out that students who wish to open enroll can apply at up to three school districts.
Other business
In other business, the Elk Mound Board of Education:
• Learned that summer school would kick off the week following the school board meeting.
• Approved the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) affiliation for the 2024-2025 school year.
• Approved a 66.0301 agreement with CESA 10 for technology services.
• Confirmed that the next school board meeting would be held June 17 at 7 p.m.
• Accepted the resignation of Asia Weyenberg as a dance coach in the school district.
Following a closed session, the Elk Mound school board:
• Approved hiring Tim Polus as a full-time custodian.
• Approved hiring Dennis Arneson as a full-time custodian.
• Took no action on a discussion item referring to the consideration of financial, medical, social, personal or disciplinary data of specific person, in particular, student disciplinary and personnel issue.
The last day of school for the Elk Mound school district was on Friday, May 24.
“We are thankful for another good (school) year and thankful for all of the community support,” Wright said.
