COLFAX — The prices for students in Colfax for school breakfast, lunch, extra milk and extra entrees will increase by 5 cents for the 2024-2025 school year.
The Colfax Board of Education approved the price increases for every category at the May 20 meeting.
Lunch prices for the 2023-2024 school year were set at $1.60 for breakfast for elementary, middle school and high school students and will increase to $1.65 for next year.
Lunch prices for the 2023-2024 school year were set at $1.50 for junior kindergarten, $2.85 for elementary school students, $3 for middle school and high school students and $3.85 for adults.
For the 2024-2025 school year, lunch prices will be $1.55 for junior kindergarten, $2.90 for elementary students, $3.05 for middle school and high school students, and $3.90 for adults.
An extra carton of milk currently costs 45 cents for students in grades 5 to 12.
An extra carton of milk will cost 50 cents next year.
An extra lunch entree currently costs $1.30 for students in grades 5 to 12.
Next year, an extra lunch entree will cost $1.35.
For a family with three students in school who eat breakfast and lunch at school, an increase of 5 cents for breakfast and lunch would amount to an increase of $54 for the school year, or an increase of about $6 per month.
If the family of three students are in fifth grade or higher and each one buys an extra carton of milk every day, that would amount to an increase of $27 per year, or an increase of $3 per month.
Open enrollment
The Colfax Board of Education also approved open enrollment applications for the 2024-2025 school year.
The number of new applications to open enroll into the school district is 27, and the number of students applying to open enroll out of the school district is 16.
Last year, the Colfax school board approved applications at the May meeting for 12 students to open enroll into the Colfax school district and 25 applications to open enroll out.
The deadline to apply for open enrollment was April 30 at 4 p.m.
These are the only applications for a student to have the opportunity to attend Colfax or leave Colfax, said William C. Yingst Jr., district administrator.
The applications do not mean the students will leave Colfax or will attend school at Colfax. Students can apply at multiple schools and can then decide over the summer about where they want to go, he said.
