Colfax-Elk Mound golfers qualify for sectional meet

TREMPEALEAU — The Colfax-Elk Mound golf team is headed to sectional competition.
The cooperative grabbed the final sectional berth when it finished fourth in the WIAA Division 2 Arcadia boys’ golf regional held Wednesday, May 22 at the Trempealeau Mountain Golf Course.
The tournament, which was slated for the previous day, had to be postponed due to Thunderstorms and heavy rain fall.
Elk Mound-Colfax tallied a 354 in the 18-hole regional tournament that featured 10 schools to capture the last team berth as it finished with just six strokes less than fifth-place Black River Falls.
The first four teams along with the top four individuals from non-qualifying squads earned berths in the sectional meet which was held yesterday (Tuesday, May 28 barring any inclement weather) at the Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake.
Bloomer claimed the regional championship with a 329, West Salem finished second at 349 and Altoona secured the other sectional berth with a 352. Following Colfax-Elk Mound and Black River Falls were Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau with a 373, host Arcadia shot a 375, Stanley-Boyd had a 388, McDonell Central/Regis tallied a 395 and Colby finished with a 398.
Only four strokes separated Colfax-Elk Mound’s top four finishers at Trempealeau Mountain.
Sophomore Orion Nichols led the local linksmen cracked the top ten shooting an 87 on the par-71 course. He shot a 44 on holes 1-9 and cut a stroke off his tally on holes 10-18 to finish with a 43 and in a tie for tenth.
Senior Zane Brice was just a stroke back with an 88 that included a 43 on the first nine holes and a 45 on the second nine to place 12th overall on the individual leader board.
Lucas Svee, a sophomore, was within a few strokes of his previous two teammates as he signed off on an 89 – a 44 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine – to place 16th.
Junior Beau Borgwardt shot a 90, with a 44 on the first nine and a 46 on the other nine holes, to place 19th.
The fifth and final competitor for Colfax-Elk Mound was senior Christian Ebert who shot a 99 to finish in 38th position. Ebert had a 45 on holes 1 through 9 but tallied a 54 on the upper nine holes.
Altoona freshman Elliot Skinner took medalist (lowest score) honors with a 78. Sophomore Regan Stiehl of Bloomer and freshman Owen Gunderson of Altoona shared the runner-up spot as each finished with scores of 80.
The first two teams and top three individuals, who are not members of a qualifying team, from sectional play will advance to the State Tournament which will be held next Monday and Tuesday, June 3 and 4 at Blackwolf Run in Kohler.
