GLENWOOD CITY — Coming into last Monday’s 18-hole Dunn-St. Croix Conference tournament at Glen Hills Golf Course, Colfax-Elk Mound trailed Glenwood City by just a point and half. Although first place had already been sewn up by defending champion Durand-Arkansaw, a top two finish in the May 13 tournament would give the local linksmen a second-place finish in the final 2024 conference standings.
But, it wasn’t to be despite all five Colfax-Elk Mound golfers delivering sub-100 performances including a pair of top ten individual finishes at the 2024 Dunn-St. Croix boys’ golf tournament. Instead, the Colfax/Elk Mound squad placed third for the second time in four days after finishing as the runner-up in the previous four consecutive conference meets.
The team finished with 369 strokes just five behind host and runner-up Glenwood City who finished second in the final team standings as well, but 30 strokes more than Durand-Arkansaw who retained their conference championship after winning all nine D-SC meets this season.
Sophomore Orion Nichols lead Colfax-Elk Mound at the conference tournament as he shot an 89 to finish sixth in that day’s final individual standings.
Senior Zane Brice was just a stroke back at 90 which placed him in the eighth position. Junior Beau Borgwardt and sophomore Lucas Svee both tied for 11th overall after they each carded scores of 95.
Senior Christian Ebert finished the 18-hole tourney with a 98 to take 15th to round out Colfax-Elk Mound’s varsity scoring.
Colfax/Elk Mound’s team tally of 369 was nine more than a year ago.
Durand-Arkansaw, led by sophomore medalist Troy Pudenz’ 82 and an 83 from runner-up Logan Weissinger, took first place with a 339. The Panthers had all five of their golfers crack the top nine.
Glenwood City finished second in last Monday’s conference tournament with a score of 364, Spring Valley was fourth with a 417 and Mondovi came in fifth with a 430.
With its victory in the conference tournament, Durand-Arkansaw won its fourth consecutive Dunn-St. Croix Conference Championship. As they did a season ago, the Panthers finished with 49.5 points in the final team standings. Points are awarded based on a team’s finish in each meet with a first-place finish earning five points, second-place four, third gets three points, a fourth place is awarded two and fifth receives a point. Those finishing points are doubled for the conference tournament.
Glenwood City tallied 37 points to finish as the conference runner-up for a fourth straight year, edging out Colfax who once again finished third in the final team standings with 33.5 points followed by Spring Valley with 19 and Mondovi had 11.
Logan Weissinger of Durand-Arkansaw was named the conference’s player of the year after he finished with 91.5 points well ahead of sophomore teammates Ethan Mack and Troy Pudenz, last year’s top golfer, who finished with 67 and 63 points, respectively. The Toppers’ Esdyn Swenby finished with 58 points to place fourth overall once again and Colfax-Elk Mound senior Zane Brice rounded out the top five with a 50.5.
It was the second straight year that Zane Brice has been able to play his way into a spot on the all-conference first team. He was the only Colfax-Elk Mound golfer to earn all-conference honors this season.
Similar to the team scoring system, the top ten individuals in each meet were awarded points based on their finish with ten points going to the medalist all the way down to a single point for tenth. Those values were also doubled for last Monday’s conference tournament.
Colfax/Elk Mound was scheduled to play at Trempealeau Mountain Golf Course yesterday, Tuesday, May 21, in the WIAA Division 2 regional golf tournament. The top four teams along with the top four individuals, who are not members of a qualifying team, will advance to the sectional meet slated for next Tuesday, May 28 at the Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake.
