COLFAX — The Colfax softball team traveled to Shell Lake for a pair of games on a warm, sunny day on Saturday, May 11 and came home with a 15-0 loss to Division 2 Ellsworth but won a close 3-1 game against host Shell Lake.
The Vikings, now 17-3 on the season, closed out the regular season with a conference game in Glenwood City on Monday and a home contest versus Gilman on Tuesday. Colfax was awarded the third seed in the Division 4 playoff and received a bye in Thursday’s opening round of regional action. The Vikings will host #6 Lake Holcombe/Cornell in a regional semifinal next Tuesday, May 21. The winner will likely play at second-seeded Chippewa Falls McDonell on Thursday, May 23.
Ellsworth
It was a rough morning for the Vikings as Brynn Sikora avoided a no-hitter by the Ellsworth hurler by getting the only Viking hit of the game. Ellsworth scored five runs in the first inning, put up three more in the third, another five spot in the third and two in the fourth to finish off the game. The Panthers are leading the Middle Border Conference at 11-3 and are 16-4 overall.
Laikyn Beyer threw the first two innings for Colfax, and gave up eight runs on five hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Alexis Schindler took over and pitched one and a third innings, allowing six hits, seven runs with two Ks and one walk.
Shell Lake
The afternoon contest was much more competitive against a highly skilled Division 4 Shell Lake team. Playing out of the Lakeland West Conference, the Lakers are in second place behind number one state ranked Grantsburg and are 16-4 overall.
Colfax scored two quick runs in the first inning and added one in the sixth while the Lakers managed just one run in the fifth against Beyer.
Although the Vikings pounded out just six hits, they appeared to be timely as Sikora batted 2-for-3 and scored twice. Hannah Peterson picked up two RBIs with just one hit and Audrey Ebert brought a runner in on her hit, while Jada Anderson scored a run with one hit.
Beyer hurled a strong six innings, giving up three hits and whiffing six Shell Lake batters while issuing just three free passes.
