The Colfax softball team is making some noise around the area and the state as they remain unbeaten in Dunn-St. Croix Conference play at 11-0.
With a 14-2 overall record, the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association (WFSCA) has them ranked number seven in Division 4 as of April 29. (They cracked the top ten a week earlier, ranked tenth.) One of their losses came earlier in the season to number one ranked Grantsburg by an 8-6 score. Fall Creek, the team that knocked the Vikings out in sectional play last year, is currently ranked number two.
Colfax defeated Durand-Arkansaw 11-3 at home April 29 and won on the road over Spring Valley 14-3 on May 3. With three conference games remaining, the Vikings have clinched at least a tie for the conference title. A win over Elk Mound, whom they hosted Monday night, would give the Vikings the outright conference championship. Colfax also hosts Elmwood-Plum City Thursday and plays in a multi-team tournament in Shell Lake on Saturday. Colfax will then be in Glenwood City next Monday before finishing off the regular season at home in a non-conference game versus Gilman on Tuesday, May 14. WIAA regional play begins Thursday, May 16.
Durand-Arkansaw
The Panthers held a 3-0 lead until the bottom of the third when Colfax tallied four times and they continued to add runs to complete the rout. They put up three runs in the fourth, a single run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Viking pitcher Laikyn Beyer gave up just one more run to the Panthers in the third inning. Beyer earned the win, allowing four hits with eight strikeouts and two free passes.
The ball was flying off the bats of the Lady Vikings with Hannah Peterson knocking out three hits with four RBIs and a run scored. Alexis Schindler followed suit with three hits, four RBIs and scoring twice while Brynn Sikora slammed a homer and brought in a pair of runs. The Vikings continued to show their aggressiveness on the base paths as five different players stole at least one base and the defense was solid by playing error less ball.
Spring Valley
Colfax led 2-0 after the top of the second inning before the Cardinals pecked away and scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. The Viking bats exploded in the last four innings however, as they put up three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, two in the sixth and finished off with three more in the seventh. Beyer gave up a run in the sixth, but finished the game with seven strikeouts, including her 100th of the season. She did not issue any walks and her defense was once again strong by not committing any errors in the field.
The entire starting lineup produced a hit as the Vikings smashed 20 of them. Sikora was an amazing 5-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, Anderson was 3-for-5 and knocked in five runs with a home run and a double, Audrey Ebert smacked a home run and collected two RBIs, McKenna Shipman blasted a triple in one of her three hits and came home twice, Aleaha Schindler picked up two hits, scoring twice and collecting an RBI, Emma Medin was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Mackenzi Loback was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
