ELK MOUND — Instead of starting at 8 p.m., graduation at Elk Mound High School will begin at 7 p.m. this year on Friday, May 17.
Graduation has been at 8 p.m. for many years, but this year it will be moved up by an hour, said Eric Wright, district administrator.
The extra hour will give school administrators — who are dressed in their suits for graduation — extra time to take down the graduation decorations and clean the gymnasium so the Class of 2024 can have their graduation party there that starts at 10:30 p.m., Wright explained.
Other graduation events include Baccalaureate at Big Elk Creek Lutheran Church on Sunday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m.
Honors Night is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, in the Elk Mound High School gymnasium.
Other business
In other business at the April 22 Elk Mound Board of Education meeting, the school board:
• Learned that the PTO Carnival at Mound View Elementary will be held May 10.
• Approved health insurance options for the 2024-2025 school year. Six plans were offered all together.
• Approved the five-year self-evaluation summary for the status of pupil non-discrimination.
• Received an update on the school district thrift sale, which will be held for one day on June 4.
• Accepted the resignation of Jeri Rykal, Spanish teacher.
• Accepted the resignation of Cynthia Mayer, full-time custodian.
• Accepted the resignation of Chris Hahn as the head high school basketball coach.
• Approved the retirement request from Keith Hanson, who has been a custodian at the school district for 40 years.
• Approved a 66.03 agreement with the Elmwood school district for a .4 position for speech and language services.
• Received a reminder that the school board meets next on May 20 at about 5:15 p.m. following the staff recognition luncheon.
• Changed the June meeting date to June 17.
Following a closed session, the Elk Mound Board of Education:
• Approved individual teacher contracts for the 2024-2025 school year.
• Approved Olivia Baskin as the student representative to the Board of Education for the 2024-2025 school year.
• Approved the continuation of support staff assignments.
• Approved hiring Ava Rindfleisch as a middle school science teacher.
• Approved hiring Angela Abbate as a sixth grade middle school teacher.
• Approved hiring Melanie Engen as a middle school and high school Spanish teacher.
• Approved hiring Jennifer Stewart as an elementary secretary at Mound View Elementary.
• Approved hiring Keith Burich as a seasonal part-time groundskeeper.
• Approved staff compensation for the 2024-2025 school year, which includes a 4 percent total increase.
