The Boyceville baseball team maintained its hold on second place in the current Dunn-St. Croix standings with a pair of conference wins last week.
The Bulldogs prevailed 24-14 in an April 22, Evenson Field slugfest with the Colfax Vikings. Traveling to Spring Valley three days later, Boyceville clipped the Cardinals 10-2 to stay just a game behind the conference leading Mounders of Elk Mound.
With those two wins, Boyceville extended its win streak to six games and improved to 6-1 in league play and 8-2 overall.
Boyceville hosted Elk Mound this past Monday in a crucial showdown. The Bulldogs travel to Mondovi Thursday, but return home the following day to host Prairie Farm. They then resume conference play next Monday, May 6 when Durand-Arkansaw comes to B-Town.
Colfax
The final score seemed to resemble a slow pitch softball game score with both teams struggling in all aspects of the game. Colfax used five pitchers in the contest who combined for 12 strikeouts but they gave up 24 runs with 14 walks and several hit batsmen along with 10 hits. Boyceville used three hurlers who combined for 12 runs with 10 free passes and 10 Ks. Defense was not a strong point either as they each had five errors in the field.
Colfax started the game on a high note scoring twice without the benefit of a hit as they used a Bulldog error, a couple of walks and a fielder’s choice to go up 2-0 after a half inning of play.
But, Vikings starting pitcher Mason Yarrington struggled in his first inning on the mound as he gave up four singles, a couple of free passes and hit two batters while the Colfax defense made two errors in the field and it was 7-2 for Boyceville after just one inning.

Colfax added a run in the second when Peyton Hover walked, stole second, moved up on a wild pitch and came home on Drew Buchner’s single. Orion Nichols took over on the mound and held Boyceville scoreless in their half of the second.
The Viking bats finally exploded in the third as Colfax went in front 8-7.
The lead didn’t last long as the Bulldogs scored three runs on a couple of free passes, a Viking error and a base hit to make it 10-8 in their favor.
Colfax brought in a new pitcher, Zach Hiitola, but he fell apart, issuing some free passes, hitting a batter and giving up a couple of hits. The defense didn’t help much as they committed two errors and after four innings, the Bulldogs were up 17-7
Colfax didn’t want to end the game early as they put up a five spot in the fifth frame.
Boyceville continued to score however, with three in the bottom of the fifth, and after the Vikings added a run in the top of the sixth, Boyceville ended the game with four final runs off two more Viking hurlers.
Boyceville finished the game with 13 hits to ten for visiting Colfax.
Senior Nick Olson and sophomore Carson Roemhild both finished the game 3-for-3. Olson smacked a pair of doubles for three RBIs and scored three runs while Carson Roemhild doubled, touched home plate four times and finished with four RBIs. Senior Devin Halama, who tallied two hits including a double of his own, also recorded four RBIs and came around to score five runs. Wyatt Sell and Zach Kersten also registered a pair of hits in the Bulldogs’ victory.
Halama, who threw three innings, picked up the victory. He was charged with six runs on just two hits, walked a trio and struck out three. Landyn Leslie and Carson Roemhild also pitched for Boyceville. Leslie went one inning on the mound giving up five runs on four hits with three Ks and two free passes while Roemhild completed two innings with a hit for three runs, walked five and struck out four.
Spring Valley
Sophomore hurler Landyn Leslie gave a complete game effort on the mound to help lead the Bulldogs to a 10-2 win in Spring Valley Thursday, April 25.
Leslie surrendered just two hits and a pair of runs in seven innings to earn the win as he recorded 11 strikeouts against five walks.
Boyceville finished the game with seven hits, three of which, including a double, came off the bat of senior Devin Halama who finished with four of the team’s seven RBIs and scored two runs.
Spring Valley led 1-0 after the first inning. Boyceville scored twice in the top of the second to go ahead by a single run only to have the Red Birds knot the game with another score in the bottom half.
That would be all the scoring Spring Valley would muster.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good with two more runs in the top of the third. They added four in the fifth and a final pair in the sixth for the eight-run win.
