BOYCEVILLE — The 13th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer event held on February 6 at the Bulldog/Hilltopper girls’ basketball game raised over $18,000 for The American Cancer Society.
“These two communities are amazing! We are very lucky to have such great support for this event,” said Basketball Coach, Jolene Bird.
Bird coaches middle school girls basketball along with fellow teacher Katie Ouellette. The pair organized a number of fundraising contests for the event this year including a silent auction, raffle prizes, a bean bag toss, a dash 4 cash, a SuperBowl Board and a three-point/half court shooting contest.
Quite a few prizes were donated by local businesses and individuals. For the SuperBowl Board the prize was a 2023 Ohio State football signed by their current team. Those partaking in the bean bag toss had a chance to win pizza for a year from Buckshots, Action City Passes, Boyceville Athletic Passes, a Chromebook package or a Broadway Bowl package.
Additionally, more than 100 items were donated for the silent auction and raffle prizes. And $1,600 was raised in one minute during the Dash 4 Cash. Besides the contests, they also held a bake sale and sold t-shirts.
“Katie is definitely the mastermind behind the event. I organize the t-shirt sales and support where needed,” said Bird.
According to the American Cancer Society website, Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaboration between the society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that started in 1993. The goal of the collaboration is to “increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities and advocacy programs.”
Bird said that while the money raised at their event is donated to the American Cancer Society a large portion remains local within Dunn County because it is donated through Relay for Life.

TEAMING UP TO FIGHT CANCER — Players on the Boyceville and Glenwood City girls’ basketball teams stood in solidarity Tuesday, February 6 in the fight to end cancer. Together, players on both squads formed a ribbon in Boyceville’s High School gym to kick off the 13th annual “Coaches versus Cancer” fundraiser before donning their respective school colors to do battle on the hardwood. The event featured a silent auction, raffles, dash for cash and food with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society to aid in its search for cures.
