The Boyceville girls’ basketball losing skid hit five games as it lost a pair of Dunn-St. Croix Conference contests last week.
Just three days after a winter storm caused their January 12 meeting to be postponed, Boyceville traveled to Durand to take on the Panthers of Durand-Arkansaw. The Bulldogs got off to a frigid start and never recovered losing the Monday, January 15 game 61-20.
Three days later, Boyceville hosted Spring Valley. The game was close throughout, but the Bulldog let a winnable contest slip in the end, losing 52-44 to the Cardinals.
With those two most recent setbacks, Boyceville heads into a three-game week with a 1-7 mark in conference play and is 6-9 overall.
The Bulldogs began a stretch of road games in Eleva-Strum on Monday. They then face the conference’s top two teams – Colfax and Elk Mound – in back-to-back contests. Boyceville was in Colfax last evening and go to unbeaten Elk Mound this Friday.
Durand-Arkansaw
The Bulldogs managed just eight first-half points when they traveled to Durand for a makeup game against the Panthers January 15.
Conversely, Durand-Arkansaw poured in 38 points in the opening stanza and held a commanding 30-point halftime advantage.
Boyceville’s offense improved slightly in the second half as it finished with a dozen points. Durand-Arkansaw tallied another 23 to win the game 61-20.
Only four Bulldog put points in the score book. Zoey Hellendrung led with nine, Sarah Stoveren had five, Cora Leslie added four and Aubrey Malean finished with two.
Boyceville finished 9-for-28 shooting, made just one of its six free throws and turned the ball over 27 times.
Durand-Arkansaw had 11 different players score in the game. The Panthers’ Sawyer Sabelko, however, was the only player on either team to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points. Riane Hayden, Emma Hoyt and McKinley Sand each contributed eight for Durand-Arkansaw.
Spring Valley
Free throws are an important aspect of any basketball game. It matters how many you make and how many you have a chance to make.
At home versus Spring Valley Thursday, January 18, the Bulldogs were awarded 15 free shots and made eight. The Cardinals, meanwhile, went to the charity stripe 30 times, making 17.
Those nine points were the difference in the game as the Red Birds left the Dog House with a 52-44 victory.
“We got beat at the line as we had more field goals but they outscored us at the line,” stated Boyceville head coach Jay Lagerstrom.
Following a low scoring but close first half, Boyceville trailed by two at the intermission – 19 to 17.
Scoring picked up in the second half with the Bulldogs hitting nine field goals including a pair of threes while the Cardinals made six, five of which were from behind the three-point arc and hit 16 of their 25 free throw attempts to pull out the 52-44 win.
Spring Valley senior Mara Ducklow was the top point-getter in the game with 21 points.
Senior Sarah Stoveren, who made two of her team’s four triples, led the Bulldogs with 11 points. Fellow senior Hannah Dunn finished with ten and Zoey Hellendrung and Aubrey Malean collected eight each.
