COLFAX — The Colfax school district, with a score of 64.9, “meets expectations” on the school report card for 2022-2023 issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Colfax Elementary “exceeds expectations,” and the middle school and high school “meet expectations,” so overall, the school district meets expectations, said William C. Yingst Jr., district administrator, at the Colfax Board of Education’s December 18 meeting.
Yingst said when the DPI first introduced the idea of the state report cards, he had asked DPI officials if they could find a way to report the results that would be easily understandable for everyone.
The result was, he said, a 79-page document that explains how to interpret the results.
The best way to make a comparison would be to compare school districts of a similar size with similar demographics, such as student population and socio-economic status, but the state report card does not make that kind of comparison, Yingst said.
Colfax “is where we should be,” he said.
District staff work very hard with curriculum coordinators from the Cooperative Educational Service Agency (CESA), and then as soon as the curriculum is aligned with state standards, then the state changes the standards again, he said.
Colfax’s “scores are acceptable,” Yingst said.
According to information about the Colfax school district on the state report card, the school district, in grades K4 to 12, has an enrollment of 727, with an open enrollment rate of 9.9 percent.
All together, 93.5 percent of the students are white, while 1.4 percent are American Indian or Alaskan Native; .8 percent are Asian; 1.1 percent are Black or African American; 1.8 percent are Hispanic or Latino; and 1.4 percent are two or more races.
In addition, 18.7 percent are students with disabilities, and 45.4 percent are economically disadvantaged.
A total of .4 percent of the students are English Learners.
School district
The Colfax school district received an overall score of 64.9 (meets expectations).
Compared to other school districts in the state, Colfax students scored better in both English Language Arts and Mathematics.
For English Language Arts, Colfax achieved a score of 62.0, compared to a statewide average of 60.1.
For Mathematics, Colfax achieved a score of 63.4, compared to a statewide average of 57.2.
Compared to school districts across the state, Colfax scored close to average, with the average score being 66.4, compared to Colfax’s overall score of 64.9.
District English
Overall for English Language Arts, the Colfax school district had fewer students who scored at “below basic” for the 2022-2023 school year compared to the 2021-2022 school year.
In 2022-2023, 20.7 percent of the students scored at below basic, compared to 23.2 percent in 2021-2022.
At the next level, Colfax had slightly more students who scored “basic” in 2022-2023 compared to 2021-2022.
In 2022-2023, 38.4 percent of students scored at the basic level, compared to 36.8 percent the year before.
At the “proficient” level, Colfax had about the same number of students for both years.
In 2022-2023, there were 34.8 percent of the students at the proficient level, compared to 34.6 percent in 2021-2022.
The “advanced level” in English Language Arts also had about the same number of students both years.
In 2022-2023, there 6.0 percent of students at the advanced level, compared 5.4 percent the previous year.
Mathematics
For Mathematics, the Colfax school district had slightly fewer students who scored at the below basic level in 2021-2022 compared to 2022-2023.
In 2022-2023, there were 25.3 percent of students who scored at the below basic level, compared to 24.6 percent the previous year.
There were slightly more students who scored at the basic level in 2022-2023.
In 2022-2023, there were 32.8 percent at the basic level in Mathematics, compared to 32.0 in 2021-2022.
The number of students at the proficient level remained essentially the same for both years.
In 2022-2023, there were 32.4 percent of students who scored at the proficient level, compared to 32.3 in 2021-2022.
There were fewer students who scored at the advanced level in 2022-2023 compared to 2021-2022.
In 2022-2023, there were 9.5 percent of students at the advanced level for Mathematics, compared to 11.5 percent in 2021-2022.
Colfax Elementary
Colfax Elementary achieved an overall score of 71.4 (exceeds expectations) on the state report card.
In English Language Arts, Colfax Elementary students scored at 69.8, compared to a statewide average of 59.1.
For Mathematics, Colfax Elementary students scored at 80.7, compared to 66.2 statewide.
Elementary English
For English Language Arts, Colfax Elementary had more students who scored at the below basic level in 2022-2023 than in 2021-2022.
In 2022-2023, there were 15.2 percent of the students who scored at below basic, compared to 11.4 percent the previous year.
There were fewer Colfax Elementary students scoring at the basic level in English Language Arts in 2022-2023.
In 2022-2023, at the basic level, there were 36.1 percent of students, compared to 37.8 percent in 2021-2022.
There were also fewer students who scored at the proficient level in 2022-2023 compared to 2021-2022.
In 2022-2023, 42.4 percent of the students scored at the proficient level in English Language Arts, compared to 45.6 in 2021-2022.
There were slightly more students who scored at the advanced level in 2022-2023.
At Colfax Elementary for English Language Arts, there were 6.3 percent of students who scored at the advanced level, compared to 5.2 percent at the advanced level in 2021-2022.
Elementary math
More students scored at the below basic level at Colfax Elementary in Mathematics in 2022-2023 compared to the previous year.
In 2022-2023, there were 10.5 percent of students at the basic level, compared to 7.8 percent in 2021-2022.
There were fewer students who scored at the basic level in 2022-2023.
In 2022-2023, there were 29.3 percent of the students at the basic level in Mathematics, compared to 32.1 percent the previous year.
There were about the same number of students at the proficient level for each of the two years.
In 2022-2023, there were 44.5 percent of the students who scored at the proficient level, compared to 43.5 percent in 2021-2022.
There also were about the same number of student at the advanced level for both years.
In 2022-2023, there were 15.7 percent of students scoring at the advanced level in Mathematics at Colfax Elementary, compared to 16.6 percent in 2021-2022.
MS/HS
While some school districts have three separate report cards for elementary school, middle school and high school, Colfax has two report cards: one for the elementary school and one for the middle school and high school (grades 7 to 12).
Colfax Middle School and High School scored somewhat lower in English Language Arts and Mathematics compared to the statewide average.
Colfax Middle School and High School had an overall score of 61.4 (meets expectations).
In English Language Arts, the MS/HS scored 56.4, compared to a statewide average of 60.5.
In Mathematics, the MS/HS scored at 51.1, compared to a statewide average of 52.9.
MS/HS English
In English Language Arts at the middle school and high school, there were fewer students who scored at the below basic level than the previous year.
There were 24.6 percent of the students scoring at the below basic level in English Language Arts in 2022-2023, compared to 31.6 percent in 2021-2022.
There were more students scoring at the basic level.
In 2022-2023, there were 40.1 percent at the basic level in the middle school and high school, compared to 36.1 percent in 2021-2022.
There were also more students at the proficient level in English Language Arts.
In 2022-2023, there were 29.4 percent of students at the proficient level, compared to 26.8 percent the previous ear.
About the same number of middle school and high school students scored at the advanced level in English Language Arts.
In 2022-2023, there were 5.9 percent of the students scoring at the advanced level, compared to 5.6 percent at the advanced level in 2021-2022.
MS/HS math
In middle school and high school Mathematics, there were essentially the same number of students who scored at the below basic level both years.
In 2022-2023, there were 35.7 percent of the students scoring at the below basic level, compared to 36.1 percent the previous year.
There were more students who scored at the basic level in 2022-2023.
In 2022-2023, there were 35.3 percent of the students at the basic level, compared to 32 percent in 2021-2022.
The proficient level in Mathematics had about the same number of middle school and high school students for both years.
In 2022-2023, there were 23.9 percent of the students at the proficient level, compared to 24.2 percent in 2021-2022.
For the advanced level in Mathematics, there were fewer middle school and high school students in 2022-2023.
In 2022-2023, there were 5.1 percent of the students scoring at the advanced level, compared to 7.8 percent the previous year.
