The Boyceville girls’ basketball team earned a split in its two games last week.
Traveling to Lake Holcombe for a non-conference contest Tuesday, December 12, the Lady Bulldogs rallied from a double-digits deficit in the second half to defeat the Chieftains 46-39.
Boyceville returned home two days later to host unbeaten Elk Mound in a Dunn-St. Croix Conference matchup. A heavy dose of full-court defensive pressure in the opening half of play helped the Mounders jump out to an impressive early advantage and cruise to a 60-25 win over the host Bulldogs.
Boyceville, 4-4 overall but 0-3 in conference games, wrapped up its pre-holiday schedule last evening when it hosted winless Elmwood-Plum City in a conference game. The Bulldogs will return to action after Christmas when they will travel to the Target Center in Minneapolis, along with the boys’ team, to play Webster on Friday, December 29.
Lake Holcombe
Leading by a single point, 17-16, at intermission, Boyceville found itself trailing host Lake Holcombe by double digits in the second half.
But, the Bulldogs overcame an 11-point deficit to earn the 46-39 victory.
Boyceville head coach Jay Lagerstrom said the dynamic of the game changed in the final five minutes of the game when the Chieftains leading scorer, Emma Lechleitner, fouled out of the game. Lechleitner, who had scored 31 and 23 points in Lake Holcombe’s previous two contests, finished with 15 points which Lagerstrom credited to the tough man-to-man defense sophomore Chelsi Holden, with some assistance from her teammates, applied against the Chieftains’ offensive standout.
With Lechleitner out of the game, Boyceville made a successful comeback and pulled out the seven-point victory.
“We played very sluggish on both ends of the court in the first half,” said Lagerstrom.
“For us to find any success, all of our players have to play with as much hustle and intensity they can and it was better in the second half,” he added.
Senior Hannah Dunn, who scored nine of her team-leading 13 points in the second half, spear headed the comeback win. Fellow seniors Sarah Stoveren and Cora Leslie contributed nine and eight points, respectively, and Aubrey Malean and Zoey Hellendrung finished with six points each.
The Bulldogs collected 30 rebounds and 23 steals in the game with Stoveren topping the team in both categories with six each. Dunn had five of her team’s 11 assists.

Boyceville finished just 18-for-55 shooting which included an 0-for-13 effort on three-point attempts and were 10-of-19 at the free throw line.
Despite fouling out, Emma Lechleitner topped all scorers with 15 while teammate Abby Jones added ten for Lake Holcombe.
Elk Mound
The undefeated Lady Mounders got defensive when they came to the Dog House December 14.
Elk Mound’s full-court defensive pressure in the first half resulted in several Boyceville turnovers and some easy transitin baskets for Elk Mound.
The Mounders held a 42-12 lead at the intermission and went on to post a 60-25 win.
In that decisive first half, Boyceville managed just a three pointer by Hannah Dunn and single baskets from Chelsi Holden and Aubrey Malean and four free tosses.
Elk Mound dialed back the pressure in the second half with the Mounders adding 18 more points to their final tally and the Bulldogs finished with 13.
The Mounders were 24-for-65 shooting which included just a 3-for-23 effort behind the three-point arc. They were also 9-for-14 at the free throw line.
Elk Mound tallied 31 rebounds compared to 22 by Boyceville. The Mounders also recorded 19 steals against the Bulldogs.
Hannah Dunn, who had her team’s lone three pointer, led the Bulldogs with seven points, Cora Leslie added five and Aubrey Malean four. Boyceville made just nine baskets in the game and were 50 percent (6-for-12) at the charity stripe.
