PRESCOTT — In a season of firsts – first-ever conference championship and first berth to the sectional tournament, the Colfax-Elk Mound girls’ golf team wanted to add a trip to the state meet to that list of accomplishments when it competed in the WIAA Division 2 sectional meet held Monday, October 2 at Clifton Highlands Golf Course in Prescott.
Unfortunately, the Colfax-Elk Mound girls were unable to secure a berth to this year’s state tournament in Madison as it finished sixth in the 18-hole, nine-team sectional meet. Only the first two teams along with the top three individuals from non-qualifying squads earned trips to state.
Prescott, who served as host for the sectional meet and is the three-time reining Division 2 state champion, captured yet another sectional title and state berth with a score of 356 at the 18-hole meet. Hayward finished second with a score of 379 to also earn its way to the state meet. St. Croix Central placed third with a 393, Spooner was fourth with a 401, Ellsworth scored a 407 to take fifth, Colfax-Elk Mound finished sixth with a 428, the Luck Cooperative and Bloomer both finished with scores of 441 to tie for seventh place and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser tallied a 458 to place ninth.
The 2023 season, however, is not quite over for Colfax-Elk Mound as sophomore Belle Kongshaug qualified for her second consecutive state meet which was held this past Monday and Tuesday, October 9 and 10 at University Ridge in Madison.
Kongshaug, who was last season’s Division 2 state runner-up, finished second in last Monday’s sectional meet in Prescott. She shot an 80 on the par-72 Clifton Highlands course.
Somerset senior Ava Pesha carded a 78 to win the individual sectional crown and earned a individual state berth along with Kongshaug and Ellsworth sophomore Lexi Marks who placed fourth with an 18-hole tally of 87.
Kongshaug was the only Colfax-Elk Mound golfer to finish the meet with a score under 100. She a shot a 39 on holes one through nine and finished the final nine (holes 10-18) with a 41.
Fellow teammate and sophomore Gabi Amble placed 30th in the 54-golfer field last Monday in Prescott after shooting a 111. Amble shot a 58 on the front nine but was able to shave off five strokes on holes 10 through 18 for a 53.
Seniors Selena Clickner and Josie Seehaver saw their prep golf careers come to an end in sectional play. Clickner hit for a 54 on the front nine holes but struggled on the back nine and finished with a 64 for a total of 118 which put in her in 43rd place. Seehaver saw her strokes increase from 57 on the first nine holes to a 62 on the final nine as she signed off on an 18-hole round of 119 which had her finish 46th.
Sophomore Isabelle Baier was the squad’s final competior at the sectional meet. Baier finished 54th after shooting a 149. She scored a 78 on the front nine but was able to cut seven strokes off her tally on the final nine to card a 71.
Belle Kongshaug began her quest for state gold around 9:30 a.m. this past Monday. Although first-day results were not available when the Messenger went to press later that afternoon, complete results came be found on the WIAA website, www.wiaawi.org.
