BOYCEVILLE — At its September 27 regular session held in the high school/middle school IMC, the Boyceville Board of Education gave its approval for several overnight and out-of-state trips and accepted a handful of donations.
Nearly a dozen overnight and out-of-state field trip requests for the fall semester were approved by the board’s members at last Wednesday’s meeting.
The high school wrestling team and the Science Olympiad squads each submitted a trio of requests for overnight and/or out-of-state excursions that each received board approval.
The wrestling team’s approved trips, which will include approximately 20 competitors and coaches, were the Dells Dual in Wisconsin Dells on December 8 and 9, the Blue Jay Invitational in Merril, WI on January 5 and 6, and the North Branch Invitational slated for January 26 in North Branch, MN.
The board also discussed possible overnight stays for the wrestling team when they compete in the Super Regional and Sectional tournaments next February but did not take any action.
The Boyceville Science Olympiad program also had three trips that received approval. Green lighted were trips to the Belleville Invitational at Belleville, WI High School on November 10 and 11, a four-day, out-of-state trip to Solon, Ohio for the Solon National Invitational set for February 1-4, 2024 and the Wisconsin State Science Olympiad Tournament in Stevens Point on April 12 and 13, 2024. All three events will involve around 70 students and coaches.
The FFA was also given the go ahead to attend the national convention which is slated for October 31 through November 4 in Indianapolis, IN. Tentatively, 11 FFA members and advisor Jenna Behrends will attend the event.
The Boyceville music department was approved for trips to the Dorian Music Festival at Luther College in Decorah, IA on January 7-9, 2034 for up to ten attendees and Nashville, TN set for May 9-13, 2024 which will involve around 50 students and teachers.
The Modern Social Affairs/Sociology class taught by Tim Engel will be sending around 20 to Feed My Starving Children in Eagan, MN prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Finally, the Bulldogs’ softball team was approved to attend the Hodag Invitational in Rhinelander, WI on April 23 and 24, 2024.
High school/middle school principal Patrick Gretzlock also informed members that the Spanish Club has begun planning for a trip to Costa Rica in 2025. He said the estimated cost per student was $2,900.
Five donations totaling $5,400 were officially accepted by the board during the meeting. They were: a $500 donation by the Boyceville Lions Club to be used for TCE student school supplies, $400 donation by the Boyceville Community Action Club to the high school and middle school bands for their participation in this year’s Cucumber Festival Parade, a pair of $500 mini-grants from the Jackie Hunt Insurance Agency (one to assist with classroom needs for TCE interventionist Angie Hellmann and the other to purchase ukuleles for the elementary music program), and a $3,500 donation to the district by George Christianson from the proceeds raised during this year’s Alfalfa Fest.
Several personnel matters were also handled during the regular September meeting.
Approval was given to hire an additional assistant science olympiad advisor as the program has already had nearly 100 students in sixth through 12th grades sign up to participate. Also approved were the hirings of Wanda Feldman as a part-time special education paraprofessional, Angie Cassellius for the full-time special education paraprofessional position, Brian Roemhild as a Prom advisor and Rochelle Olson as the yearbook’s co-advisor.
Finally, the board heard administrative reports and received an introduction to new fourth grade teacher Bethany Berg.
The annual meeting and budget hearing will be held next Wednesday, October 11 in the high school/middle school IMC.
