SPENCER — The long drive to Spencer was worth it as the Colfax baseball team pulled out a 10-7 win in the first round of the WIAA Division 4 regional tournament Thursday, May 25. It was a mild upset with Colfax being the number nine seed while the Rockets were a number eight seed. Spencer finished third in the Cloverbelt West Conference and were 11-10 overall when the Vikings came to town.
Colfax scored single runs in the first and second innings for a 2-1 lead but the Rockets tied it up with a run in the third. The Vikings pulled ahead 5-3 after four innings but the Rockets crept closer with a run in the bottom of fifth. Colfax gave themselves some breathing room with a four run inning in the top of the sixth and tacked on a final run in the seventh while holding Spencer to two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to preserve the win.
The Vikings banged out 16 hits in the game with Kade Anderson leading the way on a 4-for-5 performance including a triple. Brian Tuschl and Mitch Medin both had three hits with Medin smacking a double, picking up three RBIs and Tuschl brought in two runners.
Medin was the winning pitcher, throwing five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out two batters and walking four. Zach Hiitola hurled the final two innings, giving up three runs on two hits with three Ks and three free passes.
