COLFAX — After walloping the Elmwood-Plum City Wolves 16-1 back in April, the Viking baseball team took care of business early once again with a 10-0 win in five innings at home over E-PC May 15. (The game scheduled in Glenwood City three days later was canceled due to poor conditions of the Hilltopper field.)
Colfax hurler Mitch Medin threw a one hitter with six strikeouts and one walk for the win while Zach Hiitola finished off the final batter with a strikeout.
Colfax struck quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first when Medin singled, swiped second and third base and came in on Mason Yarrington’s double. Yarrington stole third and came in on a ground ball out off the bat of Ashton Greenwell for the 2-0 lead.
Both teams were pretty quiet offensively for the next three innings before the flood gates opened for the Vikings in the bottom of the fifth inning. Elijah Entzminger and Zach Hiitola were both hit by a pitch, Medin singled,Yarrington slammed a double, Dylyn Hiitola, Greenwell and Kade Anderson all banged out singles, Drew Buchner drew a walk, Zach Hiitola batted again, knocking out a single, and Buchner ended up scoring the eighth and final run on a passed ball.
Medin, Yarrington and Greenwell all batted 2-for-3 with Greenwell and Yarrington both slamming a double and picking up three RBIs each. The Vikings stole eight bases in the contest while Medin and Yarrington both crossed home plate twice.
The Vikings closed out the conference and regular season at Boyceville Monday afternoon. Colfax will open the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament at Spencer Thursday, May 25. The victor will face top-seeded and host Marathon next Tuesday, May 30 in the regional semifinal.
