COLFAX — After losing a close game against Spring Valley earlier in the season, the Viking softball team made sure that didn’t happen again as they crushed the Cardinals 11-1 in a five inning contest played in Colfax May 8.
Brynn Sikora started things off with a first inning RBI, bringing McKenna Shipman in with a single and the Vikings added runs in each of the next four innings. With bases loaded in the bottom of the second the Vikings added to their score when the Cardinal pitcher misplayed a pop fly and it was 3-0 when the inning ended.
Sikora led off the third inning with another single and Hannah Peterson laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first. Sikora alertly moved to third on the play since the Cardinal third baseman was off the base to field the bunt and Audrey Ebert’s base hit brought both runners in on a solid single for a 5-0 advantage.
Spring Valley finally got to Colfax hurler Mallory Field with a run in the top of the fourth but it could have been much worse for the Vikings. With runners on second and third with one out, shortstop Jada Anderson snared a line drive that appeared to be headed to the outfield and she gunned the ball to second to catch the Cardinal runner off the base for an inning-ending double play.
Colfax pretty much put the game in their pockets in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back doubles from Anderson and Sikora with Sikora’s just a little short of going over the fence. Hannah Peterson brought them both home by slamming a triple all the way to the fence and then scored on Emma Medin’s single. With Field back in control from the pitching circle, Colfax finished the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to win by the 10-run rule.
Hannah Peterson batted 3-for- 4 in the game with a trio of RBIs while scoring twice. Sikora was also 3-for-4, crossing home plate three times while adding a pair of RBIs and Medin was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Field gave up just three hits with six strikeouts and did not issue any free passes to earn the win.
