Glenwood City school board elects officers, approves hire of special education teacher

GLENWOOD CITY — With the spring election behind it, the Glenwood City Board of education swore in its newly-elected members and held its election of officers during its April 24 meeting.
Dr. Lisa Kaiser and Steve Davis, who both ran unopposed in the April 4th spring general election, took their oaths of office which was immediately followed by the board’s election of officers.
Kaiser was returned to her position as board of education president, Chuck Draxler was selected as the new vice president replacing Jon Mrdutt who retired after 18 year on the board, Sally Standaert was chosen as the treasurer and Jodi Main will assume the duties of board clerk.
About a half dozen first-grade students along with their teachers and several parents were in attendance at the meeting. The students gave a wonderful presentation on the “Adventures of Growing Plants”. The first graders and their teachers took turns explaining their project to board members.
Following closed session, the board approved the hire of Eva Groth as a special education teacher for the 2023-24 school year.
Earlier in the meeting, the board also approved the expenditure of nearly $14,000 to build a sheltered pavilion on the upper playground that will provide weather protection and outside learning opportunities, according to elementary principal Betsy Haltinner. The pavilion will be a 15’ by 25’ open structure of wooden construction with a 10-foot high finished ceiling and metal roofing. Construction is expected to be completed over the summer break.
On the construction front, superintendent Tim Johnson informed the board that the Career and Technical Education (CTE) project is slated to begin around May 8. Johnson said the normal traffic flow in the high school parking lot will be disrupted for the final three weeks of school. He also pointed out that accommodations for the May 20 graduation ceremony were being made that includes signage. A majority of the CTE renovation project is slated to be completed by the end of August in time for the start of the new school year.
In other action, the board accepted the resignation of custodian Nicole Geiten, accepted a donation from Keith and Jessica Eggert of Eggert’s Slaughtering to the Class of 2024 for Prom and a senior trip and approved several chaperones for the Kindergarten classes’ field trip to Como Park Zoo on May 5.
The board will meet next Monday, May 5 and has its annual board retreat slated for May 22.
