GLENWOOD CITY — Out of the four candidates running, Janet C. Protasiewicz and Daniel Kelly have received the most votes in the February 21 primary election and will appear on the April ballot for state Supreme Court justice.
According to unofficial election results, Protasiewicz gathered 445,196 votes statewide, or 46 percent of the vote, while Kelly pulled in 232,200 votes, or 24 percent.
Jennifer R. Dorow received 209,566 votes, or 22 percent, and Everett D.Mitchell took in 71,768 votes, or 7 percent.
Protasiewicz served as a Milwaukee County assistant district attorney for 26 years before being elected as a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge in 2014. Protasiewicz has said she supports abortion rights and has been criticized by other candidates for saying she supports abortion rights because it suggests how she might rule on cases that could come before the state Supreme Court.
Kelly served as a Supreme Court justice from 2016 to 2020 and lost the April of 2020 election to Jill J. Karofsky. Kelly has been described by several news organizations as a conservative with connections to a plan that would use fake electors to reverse the fall of 2020 election results for United States president.
Dorow is a Waukesha County Circuit Court judge best known for being the judge who presided over the Darrell Brooks case. Last year, Brooks was convicted of crashing his SUV into a crowd and killing six people during a 2021 Waukesha Christmas parade.
Mitchell is a Dane County Circuit Court judge who presides over juvenile court and treatment court. He also is senior pastor at Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church in Madison. Mitchell is known for “trauma-informed judging.” For example in 2016, he began to allow detained juveniles to be in court unshackled. Law enforcement officers said juveniles were less agitated in court and the hearings went more smoothly. Some years later, the Wisconsin Supreme Court made the change statewide to allow juveniles to appear in court unshackled.
