COLFAX — The Colfax girls’ basketball team hosted the Division 1 Hudson Raiders November 15 to open the 2022-23 season, and after the teams played a fairly even first half, the Raiders used their height and speed in the second half to pull away for a 60-30 win.
Hudson’s roster showed three players at six feet tall and the team is expected to finish near the top of the Big Rivers Conference this year.
The Vikings gave them all they could handle early, starting with a 4-0 lead on a pair of Molly Heidorn free throws and a bucket from Aynsley Olson. The Raiders knotted the score and pulled away to a 13-8 lead before they got into foul trouble. McKenna Shipman went to the free throw line three times for the Vikings and knocked down 4-of-7 free throws, and Jada Anderson canned 3-of-4 to put the Vikings up 15-13.
Hudson took the lead back on a three-point shot and a fast break layup off a Viking turnover, but Heidorn countered by draining a triple for an 18-18 score. The Raiders finished out the half by outscoring the Vikings 9-1 and led 27-19 at the intermission.
After the Vikings turned the ball over on their first possession of the second half, the Raiders put the hammer down and scored 16 straight points, taking advantage of several more Colfax turnovers and missed shots.
It was 43-19 before Shipman scored from the paint seven minutes into the half. The Vikings added nine more points on another deuce by Shipman and one each by Kaysen Goodell, Olson and Jeanette Hydukovich.
Shipman led the Vikings with 10 points including 4-of-8 free throws while Olson added five points. Colfax was 11-for-20 from the foul strike for the game. Ella Carstenson was the high scorer for Hudson with 12 points.
Colfax traveled to Bloomer November 22 for the only game of the week.
