The Boyceville softball team barely had time to catch its collective breath last week as it played seven games including six conference contests.
With three games against the conference’s top two teams – Elk Mound and Mondovi, Boyceville had an opportunity to put themselves in the mix for this year’s conference softball championship.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs lost all three of those games and another to upstart Colfax to knock them out of contention as the regular season wound to a close yesterday.
In what was to be a home doubleheader against Elk Mound last Monday, May 9, turned into an extended affair thanks to a severe storm that blew through the area dropping over three inches of rain. The Bulldogs were blanked 4-0 by the Mounders in the opening game and were trailing 3-1 in the second contest when it was suspended in the top of the fourth due to the approaching storm.
Boyceville righted the boat briefly when it pummeled Elmwood/Plum City 14-3 in six innings at home last Tuesday, May 10.
The euphoria of victory, however, was short lived as the Bulldogs lost their next two.
Boyceville had to travel to Elk Mound on Wednesday, May 11 to finish the suspended game which they ended up losing 5-1.
The following day Boyceville had to make the long journey to Mondovi to face the conference co-leading Lady Buffaloes. The Bulldogs lost yet another heart breaker coming up short in a 4-1 loss.
Still reeling from the sting of the Mondovi defeat, Boyceville lost another conference road game, this time to Colfax as the Vikings edged the Bulldogs 3-2 last Friday, May 13.
The Bulldogs were able to cap the week on a high note as they downed Durand 9-2 at home Saturday morning, May 14. Boyceville also played a non-conference game at home against Cumberland later that same day but that outcome was not reported prior to Tuesday morning’s printing deadline.
The Bulldogs traveled to Durand to finish conference play Monday. They will close out the regular season with a pair of non-conference games. Boyceville was in Pepin Tuesday to take on Pepin/Alma and will return home Thursday, May 19 to face Shell Lake.
With an opening round bye, Boyceville (#2 seed) will host the winner of the Elmwood/Plum City (#7) and Eau Claire Regis (#10) contest in a Division 3 regional semifinal next Tuesday, May 24.
Elk Mound – Game 1
A Hannah Dunn single in the fourth inning was all the Bulldogs could muster in their opening game of a home doubleheader against conference co-leader Elk Mound last Monday, May 9.
Mounder pitching McKenna Diermeier kept the Boyceville batters off balance all game long.
The senior hurler struck out the first nine Bulldogs she faced and finished with 11 Ks and no walks.
After surrendering a lead-off single in bottom of the fourth to Dunn, Diermeier sat down the next six Boyceville players that stepped to the plate to secure the 4-0 victory.
Diermeier also had a double and scored two of Elk Mound’s runs.
The Mounders scored a run in the first when Diermeier was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a sacrifice.
Elk Mound added three runs in the top of the third when Diermeier lead off with a double.
Boyceville senior Ella Holden allowed just four hits in her five inning of work from the pitching circle and struck out six but three Bulldog errors helped the Mounders cause.
Elk Mound – Game 2
In game 2, Elk Mound scored a run in the bottom of the first inning but the Bulldog knotted it at one with a score in third.
The Mounders scored twice in the bottom half for a 3-1 advantage before the game had to be suspended due to the incoming storm.
The team’s picked up the game a few days later in Elk Mound.
The Mounders added two more runs in the fifth and then shut down the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth to earn the 5-1 win and sweep.
Boyceville once again had trouble hitting Diermeier who picked up another win when she allowed just two hits and a run and struck out 13 compared to three walks over five innings.
Ella Holden lost her second straight as she gave up seven hits and five runs, striking out four and walking three in four innings inside the circle.
Olivia Ponath and Jadynn Traxler each had a hit for Boyceville.
Elmwood/Plum City
In between games with Elk Mound, the Bulldogs welcomed the Wolves of Elmwood/Plum City to Boyceville last Tuesday, May 10.
Unlike their two games against the Mounders, Boyceville batters had plenty of success against Wolves’ pitching.
The Bulldogs collected 14 hits en route to a 14-3 blow out.
After scoring a run in the first inning, Boyceville picked up five in the second as Cambrie Reisimer cracked a double while Traxler, Dunn, Harper Olson and Libby Bygd all had singles in the inning.
The Bulldogs added four more runs in the fourth on just two hits to make it 10-0.
Elmwood/Plum City plated all three of its runs in the top of the fifth.
Boyceville responded with a pair in the bottom half.
Then in the bottom of the sixth Bygd ended the game with one swing of her bat sending the softball over the fence for a walk-off two-run home run that made the final 14-3.
Cora Leslie led the team at the plate finishing 3-for-3 with a one score. Harper Olson, Bygd, Ella Holden and Reisimer all finished with a pair of hits. Besides Bygd’s 2-run blast, Holden and Reisimer each had a double.
Holden also earned the pitching victory going all six innings in the circle giving up just three runs on four hits, while striking out five with a pair of base on balls.
Mondovi
The Bulldogs had five hits when they played in Mondovi Thursday, May 12 but generated just one run in a 4-1 loss to the conference co-leading Lady Buffaloes.
Trailing 1-0, Olivia Ponath led off the Boyceville second inning with a hit and scored on a Mondovi error to tie the score.
But Mondovi added single runs in the third, fifth and sixth frames for the 4-1 win.
Throwing six innings, senior Ella Holden took the defeat as she surrendered all four Buffalo runs and eight hits. She struck out four and issued a walk.
Libby Bygd had a single and double to lead the Bulldog offense. Reisimer, Sarah Stoveren and Ponath each finished with a hit.
Colfax
Boyceville found itself trailing 3-0 last Friday, May 13 when it traveled to Colfax.
Boyceville finally broke onto the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to narrow its deficit to one run.
Unfortunately, that is as close as the Bulldogs would get. The Vikings held on for the 3-2 win despite being outhit by Boyceville 8 to 4. Three errors, however, did not help the Bulldogs’ cause.
Senior Harper Olson carried the big bat for Boyceville as she finish with three hits in as many plate appearances.
Ella Holden surrender just four hits and three runs but took the pitching loss despite seven strike outs.
Durand
Olivia Ponath finished 3-for-4 bating while Ella Holden, Hannah Dunn and Libby Bygd each had two hits including a double each in the Bulldogs 9-2 home win over Durand last Saturday morning, May 14.
In all, the Bulldogs collected a dozen hits to just four by the Panthers.
Boyceville scored four times in the second, three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Durand’s had single scores in the first and sixth innings.
Ella Holden threw all seven innings in the circle allowing three hits for two runs while striking out one and walking one to earn the win.
