COLFAX — All together, 11 Colfax High School students have recently earned gold and silver medals in Forensics, Future Consumer and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and FFA competitions.
Three of the students who competed in the state Forensic competition April 9 attended the Colfax Board of Education meeting April 25.
Jesse Lyrek earned a gold medal at Forensics.
Aydren Beebe, Amelia Schmitt, Catherine Zons and Marek Neuville all earned silver medals, according to information provided to the school board by John Dachel, Colfax High School principal.
Lyrek, Schmitt and Neuville were able to attend the school board meeting.
Lyrek’s Forensics presentation was “To the World: A Farewell for a Gentlewoman,” by Ben Jonson (who lived from 1572 to 1637). The poem starts out “A farewell for a Gentlewoman, virtuous and noble. That hour upon any morn of age, Henceforth I quit thee from my thought, My part is ended on thy stage.”
Presenting the poem in a different form of English was a challenge, Lyrek said, noting that he was surprised to have received 25 points and a gold medal.
Lyrek told the Board of Education that he was proud of the Forensics team.
“We earned no less than silver for the team!” he said.
Participants must earn at least 23 points to receive a silver medal.
FCCLA
Students from the Colfax chapter of FCCLA competed at the state Students Taking Action With Recognition (STAR) events on April 4 to April 6 at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells.
Katalina Hanson earned a silver medal in her Culinary Creations competition.
Brooklyn Adank-Bruhn and Caren Cuaquehua earned a silver medal for their Fashion Design competition and also qualified for the national competition.
FFA
Three Colfax FFA members placed at the career development events at UW-River Falls.
Amelia Schmitt earned first place in Floriculture.
Rosie Sonnentag earned seventh place in Milk Quality.
Kennedy Shane earned ninth place in Wildlife.
The Colfax Milk Quality Team also went on to the state competition.
