SPRING VALLEY — The inability to get a big hit when needed led to the demise of the Colfax baseball team as they lost 7-2 to the Spring Valley Cardinals in Spring Valley April 19.
The Vikings played two days later at home and in a very high scoring game against Glenwood City, the game was called off because of darkness with the Vikings down 18-17. The teams will finish this Thursday when Glenwood City returns for game two of the series. Last Friday’s game against rival Elk Mound was postponed due to weather.
Colfax, currently 1-2 in conference and overall play, has a full slate this week. The Vikings were in Plum City Monday to take on the Wolves of Elmwood/Plum City, they then host Chippewa Falls McDonell Central and Glenwood City on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively before traveling to Durand on Friday. next Monday, May 2, Colfax will hoste Boyceville.
Spring Valley
It’s hard to win games against a good team like Spring Valley when you leave 13 runners stranded on the basepaths like the Vikings did.
They had bases loaded in the first inning on three walks by the Cardinal pitcher but a strikeout in between the walks and two more Ks ended the threat. The Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the inning for a 2-0 lead.
Colfax loaded the bases again in the third on a Spring Valley error and two more free passes but again failed to bring any runners home and the Cardinals scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning to up their advantage to 5-0.
Colfax broke the scoring drought in the fifth when Kade Anderson singled with one out, stole second and came home on a base hit by Mason Yarrington. However, the Cardinals tacked on a pair of runs in their half of the inning to up their lead to 7-1.
After leaving the bases loaded again in the sixth, the Vikings came up with a run in the seventh as they took advantage of some erratic pitching by Spring Valley. Anderson reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a passed ball and crossed the plate when Ashton Greenwell was hit by a pitch. Elijah Entzminger and Yarrington drew walks but the game ended without any more Vikings scoring.
Mitch Medin, Anderson, Yarrington and Zach Hiitola all had singles for the Viking’s four hits in the contest and the team drew seven free passes. Bryce Sikora stole two bases and four other Vikings all had one stolen base.
Jamison Flatland started on the mound for Colfax and gave up six hits and five runs (three earned) with three strikeouts and three walks in three innings. Greenwell hurled the last three innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one K and three free passes.
