Karla Obermueller
It’s no April fools joke, but April 1st will be the last day for Karla Obermueller at the Glenwood Hardware store in downtown Glenwood City.
After 45 years in the hardware business, Karla is looking at retirement.
“I really liked my job helping customers solve their problems with painting and plumbing and electrical items.” She continued, “Everyday is a different day.”
She told about working in Glenwood City were she worked at the Midway Café for Harris and Elsa Spaeth for a couple of years, when George Steffen of Steffen’s Hardware asked her if she could learn the hardware business. “I told George that I could learn something everyday, and he said that was the answer he was looking for. I am still learning,” Karla related.
Karla worked for George and then John Steffen for 21 years and then in 1997 she started working for Wayne Bundy at the Glenwood Hardware on the community’s main street.
Karla and her husband Dale, live on the farm on 300 Street that they purchased in 1972, where they raised five children, Amy, Tim, Ronnie, Angela, and Tony. They have 14 grandchildren.
Karla hopes to spend more time this summer at her family’s cabin on Madeline Island and in the garden. She commented that they have always had a garden, but lately Dale has been the one that works in the garden.
