It proved to be a tough week on the wrestling mats for the Bloomer/Colfax Raptors.
Wrestling in Cadott on Thursday, January 20, the Raptors suffered their first Cloverbelt Conference dual loss of the season as the Hornets, ranked sixth in the latest Division 3 state according to WIWrestling.com, stung them 66-9.
Then, two days later, Bloomer/Colfax finished tenth out of 14 teams in the Shell Lake Challenge as just six Raptors wrestled and placed in the January 22 tournament that was highlighted by senior Bowen Rothbauer’s championship at 160 pounds.
The Raptors (3-1) will be competing in the conference’s crossover matches this Friday, January 28 at Abbotsford with the Cloverbelt tournament set for February 5 in Cadott.
State-ranked Cadott, a heavy favorite to win another Cloverbelt Championship this season, opened the January 20 conference dual in the Hornets’ Nest by winning the first ten matches against visiting Bloomer/Colfax to take a commanding 57-0 advantage.
The Hornets went on to win 12 of the dual’s 14 matches for a 66-9 victory over the Raptors, who lost their first conference dual after three straight wins to start their inaugural mat season in the Cloverbelt.
In its 12 match wins, Cadott was awarded six forfeits and earned four pins and a pair of decisions.
Bloomer/Colfax’s only two wins were Bowen Rothbauer’s 8-7 decision over Cadott’s Cole Pfeiffer at 160 pounds and a first-period pin from Brady Schindler at 182 pounds.
The Colfax trio of Aiden Anderson, Brison Tuschl and Luke Blanchard lost their respective matches. Anderson fell 7-4 to Kaleb Lodahl at 106 pounds while Tuschl (120) and Blanchard (152) both lost on falls.

Shell Lake Challenge
With just half a dozen grapplers competing in the Shell Lake Challenge on Saturday, January 22, Bloomer/Colfax finished tenth in the 14-team tournament after scoring 159.5 points well behind fellow Cloverbelt competitor Regis/Altoona who won the team title with 377 points.
Bowen Rothbauer, who improved to 32-2 on the season, was the Raptors’ lone champion in Shell Lake. The senior recorded four straight pins en route to qualifying for the 160-pound championship match where he beat Chase Feiner of New Richmond 3-1 to take the gold.
The Raptors had five other place winners. Ethan Rothbauer claimed third at 170, Aiden Anderson and Samy Espinal both finished fifth at 106 and 220, respectively, Kendra Hamman took seventh at 195 and James McElroy was eighth at 126.
