MONDOVI — Molly Heidorn led the Colfax girl’s cross country team to a second-place finish by winning her third straight Dunn-St. Croix Conference title held at The Valley Golf Course in Mondovi October 14. The Vikings were just four points away from winning the team title, scoring 55 points with Durand scoring 51. The boys placed fifth with Luke Blanchard leading the Vikings in 13th place.
Heidorn ran a time of 20:42 which was 30 seconds ahead of the second-place runner Courtney Stadter of Mondovi. Aynsley Olson was the second Viking runner to finish, in seventh place at 22:12, followed by Kaysen Goodell in 11th at 22:42, Jasmine Best in 12th in 22:44, Jaycey Bowe came in for 29th in 25:18 and Jenna Goodell was 45th in 27:38.
The first seven places earn first team all-conference honors and runners 8-14 are named second team all-conference. There were 55 individuals in the contest and seven full teams.
“It was a bittersweet day for us,” Colfax coach Joe Doucette said. “A lot of good performances but not a team trophy. The girls ran probably their best race of the year but just couldn’t catch Durand who have a very deep team and are rated sixth in the state. Molly Heidorn had another great race and always comes through when the team needs her. The same with Aynsley Olson and Jasmine Best. They both won their third all-conference honors. Freshman Kaysen Goodell ran her best race of the year. She has a chance to be very good in the future,” he added.
Blanchard finished in a time of 19:31 with Parker Schneider of Durand winning at 17:02. Schneider is the defending state champ in Division 3.
Following Blanchard for the Vikings was Ashton Yarrington in 19th place at 20:17, Jarod Loew in 27th at 20:52, Mark Sonnentag came in for 36th at 22:11 and Logan Swartz was 52nd in 24:14. There were 65 individuals competing with six full teams with Spring Valley winning the team title.
“The boys ran well with Luke Blanchard running his best race of the year to make all-conference,” Doucette said. “He is tough and one of the school’s best athletes. Jarod Loew ran very well also and Ashton Yarrington, who had a very good regular season, came up a little short for all-conference,” he added.
The sectional meet will be held this Saturday at Boyceville. The top two teams will move on to the state meet a week later.
“If our boys are healthy, we have a chance to finish high,” Doucette said. “If the girls can keep running well and improve, they will have a great shot at finishing in the top two spots. There are 21 teams competing and it is always a great atmosphere for the event,” he concluded.
