LA CROSSE — A pair of underclassmen represented the Colfax Vikings girls at the 2021 WIAA State Track and Field Championships while three boys competed individually along with one relay team. The Division 3 meet was held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse last Thursday, June 24.
Sophomore Molly Heidorn bested her times from the sectional meet in both events she qualified for and placed second in the 1600 meter run, clocking in at 5:18.17. She was nine seconds behind the winner, Kayci Martensen of Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg. In that 1600 meter race, Heidron was in third place going into the fourth and final lap but was able to catch up and overtake Abby Bartel, a junior from Weyauwega-Fremont, in the final 100 meters to take second by .23 seconds.
Heidorn also earned a fifth-place medal by breaking the 12:00 mark in the 3200 meter run, coming in at 11:49.66, which was 22 seconds faster than her sectional time. Martensen also won this event in 11:16.70.
Freshman Jeanette Hydukovich also competed in two events, the discus and shot put. She placed ninth in the discus with a toss of 105’ 3” which was more than five feet shorter than her sectional throw. Her shot put throw was also less than her sectional toss and she placed 13th at 34’ 2.75”. Her sectional throw was 35”.
Senior Thomas Drees scored the only team points for the boys, heaving the shot put 46’ 11” which was good for seventh place, one spot short of earning a medal. His throw was three inches longer than his sectional toss.
Junior Nathan Hydukovich came in for 12th place in the 400 meter run at :52.76 which bested his sectional time of :53.23.
The boys 4×400 meter relay team of junior Ryan Albricht, senior Max Knudson, Hydukovich, and senior Noah Heidorn was 13th in 3:40.35, four seconds slower than their sectional time.
The Vikings’ final individual competitor, Noah Heidorn, was 16th in the 400 meter run in :52.76 which bested his time of :53.24 in the sectional.
“We had many great performances across the board!” stated the Vikings’ first-year head coach Kathleen Thorn.
“A lot of students earned new personal records, and that’s what we as a coaching staff were the most interested in. We are glad that seniors Max Knudson and Noah Heidorn were able to end their high school track careers at the state meet, and wish them the best in whatever they do next!” she added.
Royall won the girls’ D3 state team title with 50 points while Fennimore was the runner-up with 47. La Crosse Aquinas captured the boys’ D3 state championship after scoring 54 points with Edgar taking second with 45. Dunn-St. Croix boys’ champion Durand finished fourth with 25 points.
