COLFAX — About half of the number of animals were sold at the Colfax FFA Alumni Auction at the Colfax Free Fair this year as compared to previous years.
The auction sold 15 meat animals all together on Sunday, June 20, including 11 pigs and four beef animals, of which three were dairy steers and one was an Angus steer.
Total meat animal sales amounted to a little over $21,750.
Pig sales ranged from $2 to $4 per pound, with most of the sales taking place at $2.50 to $2.75 per pound.
Prices for the steers ranged from $2.50 per pound to $3.75 per pound.
Fair organizers said they expected the numbers of animals and other exhibits to be fewer this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Colfax Fair Board was not able to make a decision until April about whether to move forward with the fair, considering COVID-19 infection rates and vaccination rates, which did not leave enough time for many exhibitors to get their projects ready for the fair.
