The Boyceville track and field teams traveled to Colfax last Tuesday, June 8 for the 2021 Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet and came home with one conference champion and a sixth-place overall finish for the girls, who scored 55 points. The boys’ team had just two athletes score all 14 of their points and finished eighth.
There were eight teams in both divisions and Mondovi won both the boys’ and girls’ championship. The top eight places were counted for team points.
“COVID definitely took its toll on our track teams with the season format ending so late in June,” stated Bulldogs’ head coach Corey Day.
“We did not have one senior out this year. I think the future is really bright for this girls’ team and we have lots to look forward to in the future for the boys,” added Day.
With the temperatures in the mid-nineties all week, the meet was pushed back an hour in hopes it would cool down after 5:00 p.m. Later on there was a threat of a storm in the distance but everything was completed eventually.
Leading the Bulldog girls was sophomore Haylee Rasmussen with a first place in the triple jump at 31’ .5” – Boyceville’s only conference title in the meet – and she was second in the high jump with a season’s best 4’ 10”. She was also a part of the third-place 4×400 meter relay team along with Emma Gruenhagen, Shiloh Wheeldon, and Jaden Stevens that finished with a time of 4:46.04.
Another sophomore, Abbygail Schlough, was third in the triple jump at 29’ 8.5” and also placed fourth in the pole vault at 7’ 6”.
Shiloh Wheeldon, a junior, added a fourth in the 100 meter high hurdles in :20.00, and a fifth in the 300 meter low hurdles in 1:00.47. Gruenhagen also placed fifth in the 400 meter dash in 1:07.87, Makayla Schewe was sixth in the pole vault at 7’ even, Gruenhagen was seventh in the pole vault at 6’ 6”, and Stevens added a seventh place in the 800m run at 2:42.50.
“I think we are really seeing lots of improvements with this team as we only have one junior for the girls the rest are underclassmen. We finished 4th in the conference with an effort from just seven girls,” noted Day.

Freshmen Caden Wold and Peter Wheeldon scored all the points for the Boyceville boys in four events.
Wold was third in the long jump at 19’ 2” and seventh in the 100 meter dash at :12.11. Wheeldon earned a fourth place in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in :47.11 and an eighth place in the high jump with a height of 5’ 2”.
“Peter Wheeldon did well in the 300 hurdles running his best time,” stated Day. “Caden Wold had a nice jump in the long and ran a very respectable 100 for a freshman.”
“These are the type of caliber freshmen you hope to bring in; unfortunately, there were no seniors to fill in around them to make a great team,” he added.
Boyceville was back in Colfax this past Monday, June 14 for the WIAA Division 3 regional meet. The top four finishers in each event at the regional competition will move on to the sectional meet to be held in Cameron this Thursday, June 17. The D3 state meet will be held Thursday, June 24 in LaCrosse.
