Juanita Maria Hernandez, 7, and her cousin, Sylvia Denise Whipps, 6, drowned on Saturday at a “kiddie pool” at Rockford, Illinois.
Juanita and her family were visiting at Sylvia’s home when the accident occurred at Windsor Pond in Loves Park, Illinois.
Both girls are survived by their maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Knight of Colfax.
Juanita is survived by her parents, Con and Marjorie Hernandez of Minneapolis, and two sisters, Rita and Monique; maternal great-grandfather Earl Knight, Menomonie; paternal grandmother Mary Bustos of Gagetown, Michigan, and paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Flores of Owendale, Michigan.
Sylvia is survived by her father, Howard Whipps of Mondovi, and her mother, Delores, Mrs. Arthur Evans, Rockford. She is also survived by two brothers, Keith Eisele with the Marines in California, and Darrell Eisele at home; and by three sisters, Chyrel Eisele, Kathleen Eisele and Phyllis Whipps, all at home. Earl Knight, her maternal great-grandfather, survives, as does Mrs. Muriel Whipps of Barron, her paternal grandmother.
A mass was held for Juanita on Wednesday from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at Cook’s Valley, with the Rev. Fr. Hubert L. Crubel officiating. Joint services for Juanita and Sylvia were later held at Colfax Lutheran Church, the Rev. Irwin Flaten officiating.
Joint interment was made at the Colfax Evergreen Cemetery, with Rev. Flaten and Fr. Crubel officiating.
