BARRON — A much abbreviated regular season came to a close for the Bloomer-Colfax wrestling squad this past Friday evening, January 22, when it participated in the Heart O’ North crossover duals held at Barron High School.
The HON crossover duals, which pitted North and South Division schools against one another, was not the Raptors best showing this season, neither as a team nor individually.
“It was not our best showing,” admitted assistant coach David Blanchard.
“A lot of our wrestlers had a hard time getting off the bottom and did not push the pace as the coaches would like,” he added.
Bloomer-Colfax finished 1-2 in the quadrangular meet beating Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm on the first tie-breaking criteria (first points scored, which was 10 to 2 in the Raptors’ favor) after the squads finished in a 30-30 deadlock but lost 33-27 to host Barron and 48-33 to Superior.
As for Colfax’s individual competitors, Brison Tuschl and Ayden Anderson both finished 2-1 on the evening while Julio Hernandez lost his only bout and Kaedyn Peterson went 1-2. Luke Blanchard did not wrestle.
Tuschl’s wins came via a pair of first-period pins against McKensie Clemetson of C-W/PF at 120 pounds and Julia Cox of Barron at 113. He lost by fall to Superior’s Connor Krueger.
Ayden Anderson picked up both of his wins via forfeits in the Barron and Superior duals but was pinned by Dawson Klefstad of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm.
Julio Hernandez lost his only match of the meet when he was pinned late in the third period by Wyatt Johnson of Superior.
Kaedyn Peterson’s lone victory came on a forfeit at 182 in the Superior dual.
The Raptors did, however, have a pair of wrestlers finish unbeaten in Barron. 138-pounder Alex Poirier scored a 3-0 mark with a pair of pins to go along with a major decision and Bowen Rothbauer won by fall and a decision to finish 2-0.
Blanchard and the rest of the Raptors’ coaching staff said that they are hoping for better overall performances when the B-C wrestlers open the WIAA tournament series this Saturday, January 30 in the Division 2 regional competition at Altoona High School. The other regional teams will include host Regis/Altoona, Abbotsford/Colby, Medford, Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal, Spencer/Columbus Catholic, and Stanley-Boyd.
The top two place winners at each weight will advance to the individual sectional meet to be held the following Saturday, February 6 at Neillsville High School.
Unlike previous years, there will be no team sectional this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the team that finishes with the most points at the sectional will earn a berth in the team state meet to be held Saturday, February 20 at Adams-Friendship High School which will also be the site of the Division 2 state individual championships on Saturday, February 13. Only the top two individual sectional finishers will move on to state.
