GLENWOOD CITY — A strong offensive effort helped propel the Colfax girls’ basketball game to its second win of the season.
In the first half, Abby Irwin scored 11 points and Jillian Bowe, Madison Barstad and McKenna Shipman each added six points to the team tally as the Lady Vikings took a 33-22 lead into intermission in Glenwood City last Friday, December 11. Colfax then cruised past the host Hilltoppers in the second half to claim a 49-43 win.
With the victory, Colfax improved to 2-1 in Dunn-St. Croix play and 2-2 overall.
The game started slowly with Colfax taking a 5-1 lead with baskets by Madison Barstad and Abby Irwin and a free throw courtesy of Rylee Parker. After the Toppers’ Maddie Oehlke scored a hoop, Colfax made it 9-3 on a layup by Irwin and a pair of foul shots from Jillian Bowe.
Glenwood City’s Kendall Schutz cut the Colfax lead in half when she drained a three off an inbounds pass to make it 9-6.
But the Lady Vikings then went on a 11-0 spurt to increase their lead to 20-6. Emilee Burcham-Scofield and Shipman netted a hoop each before Irwin sank a trey and put back a rebound for two. The Toppers’ Delanie Fayerweather stopped the Vikings’ run with a pair of charity tosses (20-8) but Jillian Bowe responded with a three for the Vikes and Delanie Fayerweather answered with two. Colfax added a free throw to lead 24-10.
Yasmin Mendez then hit a three to spark a 7-1 Topper run that also included four consecutive free throws by Maddie Oehlke to make it 25-17.
Colfax used an 8-5 advantage in the final three minutes of the half that included a basket by Irwin and two from Barstad to lead 33-22 at intermission.
The Lady Toppers started fast in the second half as Bella Rassbach, who had a quiet first 18 minutes, canned a three. GC then came up with the steal and Maddie Oehlke made a trey and suddenly the Hilltoppers were within five of Colfax at 33-28.
But, a six-point run helped Colfax build its lead back to 11 at 39-28. Barstad hit on a 2-point basket followed by back-to-back hoops from Jillian Bowe that did the trick.
The Toppers got a fast-break hoop from Fayerweather and free throw from Maddie Oehlke to get the deficit back to six only to have the Vikes’ Madison Barstad hit a trey which was followed by a Shipman hoop for a 44-33 Colfax lead with 11:15 to play.
However, points suddenly came at a premium after that as the teams had a hard time putting the leather ball through the net. Glenwood City was able to double up the Colfax – 10 points to 5 – over those final minutes but the Lady Vikes held off the Toppers’ late rally to win 49-43.
Barstad led the Vikings with 14 points including eight in the second half featuring a pair of threes. Irwin, who was held scoreless in the second half, tallied 11 and Bowe finished with 10 points as did Shipman.
The Toppers’ Maddie Oehlke led all scorers with 15 points.
Glenwood City also shot well from the free throw line, making 13 of their 16 attempts compared to just 11-of-22 for Colfax.
The Vikings played at Regis Monday evening, December 14 and will return home to host Durand this Friday, December 18. They will then welcome Fall Creek to town next Monday, December 21 before breaking for the holidays.
